Random?? I was responding to the post that Rush is the "greatest 3-piece in History." As in, "better than any trio involving Buddy Rich or Thelonius Monk?" I think not.nuffink wrote:Spooked by a truly random posting, the forum regroups.
Jimi Hendrix Experience?

Page was a drunk, but anyone who knows me knows what's coming...alternate tunings...Page was the king, that's why he stuck to pentatonics so much...my half brother is probably one of the best page clones in the world (I hate his guts because he's a jerk) he studied page to the max. In 1982 he had Gibson build him a doubleneck (then 1400) exactly to the specs of page's. In the late 90's he bought one of the original Transperformance guitars when he saw pges...he's sold it when he went broke (a habit of his) to Rod Stewarts guitarist for 3k. As much as I think my half brother is a jerk, he will tell you what tuning page used for every song and he will play anything by page like he wrote it.Cosmic Bandito wrote:Jimmy Page is my #2 favorite guitarist, but he seemed a little less innovative then Hendrix in voicings, maybe just stuck a little closer to the pentatonic scales, but his alternate tuning stuff is my favorite. I think Jimi Hendrix was genius who took ALOT of acid making him more unconventional than Page (at least that my theory) and why he was really shitty live, altough Page wasn't great live either(probably drunk). You have to listen to their studio work and learn a few songs via guitar tab. These guys really ruined all modern guitar music for me...
I too use tons of tunings, unlike my half brother I actually know more then one scale, in fact chord wizard has a great program (yes I have it) that will show you fingerings for any chord, any relation and any scale or mode in any tuning on most stringed instruments ( http://www.chordwizard.com/gold.asp ) around 70 bux us...

you know what's kinda funny? There's a fine line between greatest and most talented, defining it is tough...but if you add in success, duration, growth, and impact (and yes rush was innovative as well) Rush really could be defined as the greatest 3 piece band...just as after all these years (and I haven't been a fan since Mick Taylor split) the Stones truely are the greatest rock and roll band...clueless wrote:fishbowl.tucson.az wrote:Random?? David Crosby? Joni Mitchell? Michael Hedges? Phil Keaggy? David Wilcox?!hink wrote:Cosmic Bandito wrote: Page was a drunk, but anyone who knows me knows what's coming...alternate tunings...Page was the king
I mean Page is great, truly great, but he doesn't necessarily get "king of alternate tunings", considering the competition for that title!

just outside of cambridge mass is davis square, it's very Irish. I worked in a music store there before Mars for several years...we sold penny whistles almost daily...but I'll never forget the first guy who came in and asked for plectums...I had know idea what he was talking about....something I have had in my pocket for over a quarter century...I felt so stupid..Aye, I be one of them gae-licks meself.hink wrote:I even left out gaelick music completely...which dates back a tad ways I reckon...![]()

I stopped reading this thread after the second page as I'm sure going on would have only infuriated me, but Mitch Mitchell is an amazing drummer by any standards. Who plays like that in a hard rock band nowadays? Mitchell, Bonham, and Moon. Those are rock drummers. All had a solid jazz background as well (something entirely missing in modern rock drummers). Hell I wish my band had a drummer half as capable as those guys (my drummer's not bad by any means, but c'mon half a Mitch Mitchell is still amazing).
And about the fuzz comment? First off Purple Haze and Foxy Lady were fuzz face songs. Very few Hendrix tunes afterwards used one. Mostly just distorted Marshall stacks, with the occasional fender combo [Voodoo Child, and Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) both bassmen], and other odd amp in the studio, and entirely used Marshall stacks live. Sorry the distortion wasn't more distorted for you, but in 67-70 you could only get so much distortion even with three double stacks of Marshall plexi's.
Cream had some absolutely tunes, and as far as musicians go was an amazing three piece, but too many songs are just mediocre for me.
Also R.E.M. has pretty much been a three piece since the drummer quit, unless you count the various drummers they use/used live and in studio.

I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

I don't know...but growing up around that time, it felt to me like it was Hendrix that gave birth to the milieu of Guitar Pyrotechnics from which sprang Page in his Zeppelin incarnation and Rush and the heavy metal progeny. Kinda like Hendrix was the Avatar and the others were disciples and apostles. Not to detract from them and their accomplishments but it felt (at the time) that they were all somewhat derivative -in feel, if not in playing style.

so who were jimi's influences, or are you saying he had none?....clapton and beck aquired fame before him, page was more the same time, why do you think he went to England? There was a pre-established market for him to make a splash in...where in the states it was all screaming teenage girls that controlled the charts...weren't too many teenage screaming girls for jimi...mayan wrote:I don't know...but growing up around that time, it felt to me like it was Hendrix that gave birth to the milieu of Guitar Pyrotechnics from which sprang Page in his Zeppelin incarnation and Rush and the heavy metal progeny.
