Rush was good in concert but the only thing I can stand to listen to is 2112.

ELP was better musicians. Rush has a drummer and two other guys. ELP has a drummer, keyboardist, and some other guy.

The Trio I most like to listen to,

and for some reason no one has mentioned them. ...

As the core, at least: there were a few guest appearances, but those three were the official KC band for that album, after previously dropping Muir and Cross across the preceeding albums.

My vote is for Rush. I'll tell you I'm bias. I know what I like and don't apologize for it.

There are certainly many players that can play at their level and some would say moreso, but in the end, who do you just like to listen to? For me it is clearly Rush.

They have disapointed me on a couple of albums, but that hardly overshadows their whole career. Someone earlier posted the comment..." a Drummer and two other guys". To you fine Sir, I say... never mind:)

I have had the good pleasure of seeing Rush in concert a few times and was thrilled by it. Mind you, in my experience though, there is not a better "sounding" concert than the Pat Metheny Group. But, that is four guys plus extras:) Cheers...

I'm definitely with you on that....some of my favorite stuff there. :)
Mind you, I love Rush's music too (Alex Lifeson is still one of my favorite guitarists 8)), up until "Presto" .

But Donk's pic of Motorhead.....ahh yeah. One of my faves as well (at the other end of the spectrum.....ahhh, the splendid voice and playing style of Lemmy! :D ).

Other fave trios? Hmmm...

The Mermen
The Tik Tok Men
Jon Butcher Axis
ZZ Top
Robin Trower
Bozzio/Levin/Stevens
The Cure (well, they started out as a trio...)
Bel Canto (same situation)
Tangerine Dream (same situation again...)
The Police
Goo Goo Dolls (well, I liked them up to "Boy Named Goo")
Primus

(I'm sure I could think of a lot more...)

Gotta go with The Police - especially if you figure in popular appeal, sheer number of classic hits and raw talent.

Post

The Police gets my vote. I know all of their songs and I guess I've heard about 2 or 3 Rush tracks. I can only name one of them, but I don't really know the name of it.

I like the Police at lot, too. I think I would make them number 2. But, IMHO, Rush is in its own league (the lyrics are pretty much irrelevant to me).

I saw Rush in Sao Paulo in 2002, on the last leg of their Vapor Trails tour (actually it was the first of their 3 shows here in Brazil). There was 60K fans, the biggest audience in the entire Rush career.

I'm a big fan of Rush (i was a drummer till 1999), but the sound of that show was completely awful (AFAIK, seems like there were some alignment problems / phase cancellations with those V-DOSC systems in rainy days).

Anyway, i got the Rush in Rio DVD, and man, it's pretty nice hearing it LOUD in 5.1  ). Dunno if you guys have heard it, worth every penny (IMHO).
