yeah they are right up there with rush :P

If they had only let
Dennis DeYoung play the keys and never open his freakin' mouth to sing, they wouldn't have been too bad. when I hear songs like 'babe' and 'lady', I just want to grab a baseball bat and smash him in the teeth.
but now dammit, I've got to listen to 'come sail away' for the synth work!
:x

i can't listen to "come sail away" without hearing cartman from south park singing it in my head.... god bless trey parker. ;)

I had the pleasure to see them live when the Cornerstone album was out, they were a kick-a*s rock'n'roll band back then that played some ballads (and played them nicely).
Okay, DeYoung's vocals are debatable, but the two guitar players James Young and Tommy Shaw were amazing.
Shaw played an 8 minute mandolin solo (really solo) on Boat on the River and the crowd went nuts. Don't try this at home or on one of today's commercially oriented concerts !
A very underrated band imho, though their albums really sucked fron Cornerstone on.

Reminds me of the wedding band in Old School. :)

that was funny as hell, but I like that song...here they are, the songs by styx I like ...Come sailaway, Lady, Queen of spades, Blue Collar man, Renegade, and Pieces of Eight (the song)...that's it...
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Geek Rock??? It's Talking Heads. Hands down.

Or maybe I don't understand your definition of "Geek Rock."

as a hoot i bought a best of and Live CD for a friend last Christmas.
it was worth it to see the look on another friend's face when we were playing this very loud when he walked in the door

shock, disbelief, denial

imho, for an overblown, pompous band that thought a little too much of themselves, they wrote some pretty good songs.

i had another friend who worked security for a few venues one summer. for styx it was his job to stand in a hallway and intimidate anybody who came near two doors. he got thirsty and popped into one door to get a quick drink at a water fountain he knew was there. Styx was in there and gave him such a look, but he wasn't one to be made to feel inferior -- that's why he was good at security -- but he lost the job after that.

Canadian's hold Styx in high esteem for some reason?
If it wasn't for Styx, we wouldn't have spawned the likes of Saga, Prism, and Trooper. All of whom seemed to be riding on Styx's coat tails of trend setting, right up to the jumping in the vat of shit to find some loose money. ;)
