hey,
im wondering if anyone has bought anything from http://www.modernbeats.com ?
they mainly do Nu Skool RnB hiphop type beats. fairly priced at $30 a library, but there is very little info on how many beats are in one of these libraries(yeah maybe im just lazy to look harder). also has anyone used their scratch samples. im always interested in supporting smaller companies so... let me know what's up here.
thanks.

I have their Tim1 and Neptunes3. Its definetly Nu Skool. I have a hard time find the right bass drum in these libraries, but the snares and hits are tops. I wish I had went with the MAudio Prosession samples instead. Ordering the downloads from them was kind of strange too.Mr. Tunes wrote:hey,

oh i see i think they are all one-shot hits
could you tell me how neptune drums and timb are different? and how did you pick which volume you wanted? i am intruiged but i dont know if this sort of scheme actually gives you the best value for your money. you can of course opt to buy all volumes at once.

there's a site called beats by mail.com that gives really nice sets free. They also sell sets at a more reasonable price. $30 seems a little steep to me for a small collection.

nah if it's really quality than 30 dollars is fine. a few years ago i bought this sample cd Cratedigging that costed about 30-40 bucks i think. since then producer Gino Nave cancelled the project and fully disappeared. i was so confused about the whole thing. some of his beats were killer, granted he wasnt afraid to admit that the individual hits came from vinyl records!
-but he didnt actually steal anything in the grand scheme of making beats, im pretty sure had some sort of nice roland or yamaha for certain musical ideas and made them sound like vinyl.
i want to know how the hell do you get that timba or neptunez sound? those huge claps and all. it's almost a "new motown" what these producers are doing-experimenting with tons of compression and effects.

I am primarily an RnB and Hip Hop producer and I am seriously fussy about the sounds I use. I have a huge catalogue of CD's and samples claiming they are 'slammin hip hop beats', when they are weak rubbish. In my opinion, the Modern Beats sounds are WELL worth the money. They actually are the kind of dirty, nasty, fat sounds I think you are looking for. It's rare for me not to use something from one of their kits in a tune. You get what you pay for. I also have virtually the whole Bangin Beats library, which is quite good, but the way that Modern Beats EXS instruments (or Halion etc.) are set out is really well done.

Have you tried Precisionsound? Their Treated Drums/Ethnic RnB bundle is pretty cool. It even imports pretty well into SampleTank2, which I know you'll appreciate.

Profyle thanks for sharing your experience with me. they definitely do seem like useable drums i just cant pick a library to test the waters with.
which ones do you have? and which ones give you a taste of different flavours? i like dark hiphop which is the Dre series but i also really need those newer sounds like neptune or timba.
Jeez thanks for the suggestion i will check it out. i guess i could also look at the libraries that were just made for Sampletank but i think those are more my usual hiphop/bigbeat stuff- like norman cook or coldcut. i would like those sounds no doubt(some of my fav producers) but im really looking to get things i have never worked with like RnB beats. thanks again

You can check the demo mp3's there, i know i know i'm usually not keen on that since nowadays almost anything sounds good in the demos and you don't know what extra processing is going on there, but in this case it's just drum hits so you can get a feel for the 'timbre' of the sound at least.
Personally i got the dremendous drums and was very satisfied with them, almost better than i expected, although in between the good ones there were some wack hits the percentage of usable sounds was very high.
The neptunes style demo didnt impress me, claps especially, but that's just taste i guess.

yeah those demos play the same beat over again. compared to how many are in a pack i think it's kind of funny. if you're a company all you have to do is layer an instrument over the beat and no one can grab the hit. they should be bringing an onslaught of beats at you. get the kids throwing their credit cards in air.
oh jeez i just listened to the precision sounds stuff- have you heard the modernbeat demos? the modernbeat demos have a real edge to them that precision sounds doesnt have for the style im seeking. i can do most drums in sonik synth. i know you can too. it's just this one hiphop style that i need to fill in a tiny gap with. i should add that if you want to be realistic all the drums in Reason from e-lab are definitely every tone you need to get started. the worst is that you cant use any of the loops because they are so overused it's not even funny. i think i hear one a day throughout the tracks and television commercials i hear. that's another reason why i like to find small companies like Modernbeats.

You didn't hear the Precisionsound drums through ST2's Tube EQ.Mr. Tunes wrote:oh jeez i just listened to the precision sounds stuff- have you heard the modernbeat demos? the modernbeat demos have a real edge to them that precision sounds doesnt have for the style im seeking.
True. Taste is a big factor. I wasn't really interested in the style of the ModernBeats stuff. I'm sure it kicks arse - it just wasn't what I was looking for. I've got a bunch of other drums and custom kits imported into ST2 as well, so I guess I was filling a gap too.Mr. Tunes wrote:i can do most drums in sonik synth. i know you can too. it's just this one hiphop style that i need to fill in a tiny gap with.

I pretty much have the entire Modernbeats library. The only ones I don't have are 'Guitar Bites 2&3'. I'm sure they're probably decent enough too, but guitar is my main instrument and I don't think I've used Guitar Bites 1, which I do have. Personally I would go for Neptunian Drumz 1 & 2, since 3 seems to be a selection of the same or very similar sounds from the first two treated slightly differently, filtered, eq'd etc.
The only sounds I don't rate from Modernbeats are the Telephone Filtered Drums - I've got both sets and have never found a good use for them. If you want that kind of sound you'd be far better of treating the sounds yourself.
I honestly think you won't be disappointed if you invest in the ones I have recommended - like I said in my first post, I'm a fussy guy and they are good enough for me.
