I hear a lot of talk regarding a particular instrument's filter sounding "good" or sounding "bad", and I was wondering if someone could point me to audio resources so I can educate my ears to hear the qualitative difference.

Don't bother, the "talk" you hear is all subjective. For instance there are a lot of people thinking the world of Korg MS-20 oscillators & filters, but personally I can't stand them.
If you like it a lot, its good for you. If you think it can be much better, its not any good for you. So try some free virtual analogues, and see what you like best.
