hi
I love Amon Tobin's music and I know many here also love it. It's just amazing.
I've read about his latest album just released, which is Chaos Theory. It's a soundtrack but anyone has listened to it? is it good? does it compare to his prior albums?
opinions welcome.

amon is great!
not listened to the new album, but it will be good for sure.
amon is very important to me. not just the music he's doin, but also
- i got my email and web adress from "permutation" ("people like frank")
- he brought me to ninja tune () -> big dada (roots manuva
) -> hip hop (not listened to before)
how do you like the live album he did? i saw him live three times by now (in belgium and the netherlands), banging! but i dont listen to the live album very much.

You can listen extracts (45 sec) from this album here :

It's very recognizable tobin's style. In fact I found it quite disturbing as it seems Amon Tobin uses always the same "recipe" in his music.

I bought this album the other day, and I was pretty disappointed.
I though Amon Tobin was a producer- but the soundtrack is a live band. I want to hear programed drums, not a live drummer.
Anyway, this is the first time I have heard this artist. Perhaps all of his music is a live band? I don't know.
The album is also only 10 songs.
I think the concept of a popular "electronic" artist doing a game soundtrack is a great idea. I hope to see more of it.
However, like I said, this is live musicians.
Also I thought the music itself was pretty bad.
My 2 cents....
Cheers

Hmmm... No. Ever heard about sampling ?However, like I said, this is live musicians.
Just listened to the extract from the link above, sounds even more attractive than the previous one. Of course this sounds like Amon Tobin but IMO it's good as he's the only one to do that kind of music, while my personnal taste would be to say that a musically balanced production would be rather as much as RnB tracks than Metal tracks than Amon-like tracks
Anyway, a bit like anything else in music, if you're new to the concept every Amon Tobin sounds like the same, while if you're a fan, each record has its sound...

This is a soundtrack to a video game, Splinter Cell Choas Theory, which will be released in March. A 5.1 mix of the album will also be released around the same time.
There's an interview of Amon at gamespot.com if you care for more info, as well as a video for one of the tunes.

No. In the CD insert it lists the musicians that created the music. It's a full band.Red_Force wrote:Hmmm... No. Ever heard about sampling ?However, like I said, this is live musicians.![]()
I would have much rather preferred it to be sampling.

Amon has technically used live musicians for his last few albums because they are made up of samples that he lifts from records. He tweaks them so heavily that they sound electronic in nature, but unless I'm mistaken, there is very little in the way of electronic instruments used in the albums he's recorded under his name. The Cujo stuff sounds a bit more electronic in origin though. As far as why he used lived musicians for Chaos Theory, I can think of a couple reasons. First, I imagine that the whole issue of copyrights was very much on the mind of the game developers. The music will be reaching a much wider audience than before, and I'm sure the developers don't want a copyrights lawsuit on their hands. The other theory I have is that they wanted the soundtrack to have a cleaner sound than what Amon usually produces. His recordings seem to have a slightly grungy feel to them, probably a result of the many sound sources he uses.esl wrote:I bought this album the other day, and I was pretty disappointed.

I'm really digging the soundtrack, it definitely does NOT sound like a band of musicians. It is 100% Amon, and instantly recognizable as his sound. I do sense a bit of restraint though, but that's expected since there are boundaries that need to be maintained when dealing with a soundtrack.
