Great news for the linux/bsd-community. It's unbelievable, but the latest WINE (windows emulator for linux, freebsd etc.) runs Audiomulch and energyXT!

I have just tried this on my FreeBSD-box. energyXT standalone doesn't make sense as you don't have an ASIO driver for BSD, but within a VST host (such as Audiomulch), energyXT works like a charm. It even starts quicker and doesn't seem to be much slower than on Windows (I'll test CPU consumption later).

Wow ! Great news indeed. I've got to upgrade wine in my Debian box ASAP.

For me it's working with Wine 20050111. It would be interesting to see if it also runs on Linux. Unfortunately, you can't use external MIDI because I could not find out how to do that with wine, yet.

OK, I updated Wine on my Debian Linux box and got EXT to work, loading a bunch of VSTs and VSTIs, using EXT sampler, loading soundfonts and so on.

It is behaving incredibly well.

No MIDI neither but there must be a way to connect JACK with a Wine server though. I remember reading this somewhere.

Simply... great...

Just out of curiosity, is this working with eXT standalone or eXT as a plugin? I'm getting awfully tempted to drop a linux installation on my daw and see if I can't get it going (no more MS, hooray!)

Both are working, but no sound with standalone as there's no ASIO driver under Linux. The main difficulty remains Wine : configuration was a real pain in the a$$. You have to know Linux in depth to set it up nicely and to be ready to face any problem

No. I had problems with Synthedit made VSTIs. Seems some APIs are still not handled by Wine.

Worked fine with C++/delphi made plug-ins though.

Not quite the same

I've never bothered with WINE before, is it much more difficult than say, setting up alsa and jack from source on the 2.4 linux kernel? (last difficult thing I did)

jorgen has mentioned his intentions to port eXT to *nix a few times. He even once said he has it running already with OSS support, but he also said he doesn't plan on supporting VST's. Change his mind!

I guess this depends on the OS or distribution you use. On my FreeBSD system (5.3) (which is not Linux), I didn't have to configure WINE at all, because it ran out of the box.

Normally MIDI should work with WINE as it can load the required dlls, but on FreeBSD, the MIDI-kernel modules are currently under revision and not in the cvs, so I cannot check it out.

He he he, you're right furukama, I was just coming to post on that particular subject.

I was trying to force Jack support, which wouldn't let me use MIDI as I have a little problem to solve with my Jack server. This was not a Wine failure. Switching to ALSA (and OSS, I tried both) solved this. Now I have MIDI support in Wine.

Well, there's no how-to to follow. Just mess with config files, ruin everything, re-install from scratch, try again, make sound work and ruin window API support, edit to get back to previous config, try again, nuke your install, reinstall from scratch, try again...

This is a real geek thingy for now, but it is getting better and better every time, just like EXT.

That's what I loved about WINE (besides the quick development process which always was good for surprises: programs that always worked suddenly failed and the other way round)

This time, I just installed wine with "portinstall wine", I changed to the EXT directory and typed in "wine standalone.exe". Then, after a short while (rebuilding fontlists), the energyXT gui popped up.

At first, I was thinking my wine-installation messed up, because I'd expect anything but not this ...
