What are a lot of us amatuer producers striving to reach for? These extremely post-processed mixes we hear on the radio. Boy, are there dynamics loud and snappy we would think, i heart this producer. But was the original cut anything like this. Was it full of bass clashes and noise from mediocre samples, did it lack punch? I am very curious about this certain thing... We look up to a group of producers, say the neptunes, who a lot of forums onthe itnernet hail as god. these 2 kids, out of nowhere, can produce beats, eq, fit everything in, perfectly, just like that? just babling but..any comments? i think the newgeneration of musicians are being mislead by post production and radio-ready formula :( This is being geared towards hip hop and so...these producers claim to do all the stuff in there mpc all-in-one box and everything comes out beautifully? i dont think so...

I think a lot of radio is supposed to be like Muzak and Holiday Inns -- background music to other activities and a kind of predictable experience with some continuity of ambience

Music on the radio probably has a smaller dynamic range in order to maintain its presence amidst the surrounding noises of traffic, cleaning the house, office politics, etc.

People should aim for whatever kind of overall sound they believe fits their material, guided by other tracks they have admired as well as their own taste and judgment -- of course it doesn't hurt to come up with something good and tasty that doesn't sound like anything else

Edit: Or maybe I missed your point? Was it more about music on the radio being produced by a team of people, as opposed to one or two people at home?

I don't think original mixes are neccessarily "radio-ready"... radio does a lot of over-compensation in terms of compression etc, because, as posted above, the medium has to generally compete with other noises, and EVERY song has to grab your attention.

Listening at home, in a quiet environment, by contrast, one can put in a disc that actually has dynamics going on that would be lost on radio, and it adds greatly to the music.

Between the hacking of a mix, chopping music to a certain timeframe, and the slew of other ways we as fans of music can discover and enjoy new things, why is radio even an issue anymore?

Why compromise yourself?
