I still have acid4; didn't upgrade because of what I've heard. Not to mention, I don't use it that often. Midi is terrible, and get my best results rewired to orion.
Maybe someday, I'll jump to Live.

I still use Acid 4, it's a great app. I use it as it was originally intended, just for the loop stretching - all midi duties are taken care of by the venerable Cubase VST 5.
I find Acid a breeze to use, it's so damn quick and easy. I'm aware that newer apps now incorperate Acid's features (FLStudio, Sonar etc...) but why spend more money when the app I already own works so well?
If i was in the market for a new software studio i'd consider a different "all-in-one" app - but second-hand copies of Acid are knocking about for next to nothing; if it's just loop stretching your after, you can't go wrong.

I would have updated, but sonar 4 came along and did everything I needed in an elegant package...

I'm still using Acid and I even upgraded from V 4 to 5 (although I wasn't particularly excited about that purchase, but I really wanted VST-fx without the need for a wrapper).
I think Acid's greatest advantages don't show at first sight, which may be the reason many musicians don't take it seriously. It doesn't look too fancy, the piano roll is very VERY basic (although I can't think of anything I'd really miss) and the "media manager" is such an obvious attempt to sell more Sony loop libraries it has to annoy even the biggest fan. So, Acid's definitely heading in a wrong direction at the moment, to some extent.
I was just about switching to Live when I read all the complaints about its bad audio/mixing engine and the amount of cpu power it needs even for just a few tracks and effects.
Here's where Acid is strong: Great time-stretching algorithms, preview of non-acid loops synced to the song's tempo (Live does that too but not as good I read) and the ability to handle quite some tracks with quite some effects and more - others have mentioned it here before. There's also a lot of little tricks and shortcuts that take a lot of work in other apps and can be done in Acid with one or two clicks.
I've not yet found anything I couldn't do in Acid, although some things do need workarounds, but if you're used to it, that's not much of a problem.
Nevertheless, some things in Acid have to be improved:
- drop the "media manager" - don't make Acid a selling tool for loop libraries
- give us a better midi editor (drum editor f.i.)
- drop the price - $500 is too much (also the upgrade price is very high)
- focus on getting rid of the bugs - I wish Acid was as reliable as Live

I have no desire to use MIDI or VSTi's in Acid so I never upgraded. I wish they would focus more on looping and integrating with other products. I still use Acid 4 to quickly chart ideas and for me it is much better at this than Live. But then, I move everythibg into Sonar which handles Acid loops very well.
Sonar does somehting that I really wish Acid would do. You can use more than one loop file in a single track. If you use 4 drum loops to make a part, you have to use 4 tracks in Acid. You can put them all into a single track in Sonar.

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

which is why acid may never leave my HD even when after sonar 4 finds it's way there.good for that, and rendering the loop to the tempo you need.ttoz wrote: so many acid bashers here, all the time over the past
months, but until *every* other host incorporates acid's automatic loop preview at project tempo feature, there will ALWAYS be a place for acid in the market place. It has taken the tediousness out of finding a loop for your song.

I notice some newer loop libraries are coming out with both acidized wav and rex2 versions of thier loops,
and wonder if there might come a day (with so many apps adopting support of the rex2 format) that it might not be such an edge.

yeah, I'd love that too. It can get cluttered very quickly the way it is now.Rabid wrote:
