If it wasn't for Styx, we wouldn't have spawned the likes of Saga, Prism, and Trooper. All of whom seemed to be riding on Styx's coat tails of trend setting, right up to the jumping in the vat of shit to find some loose money. ;)
Peter Sellers did that first... in THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN.

Styx is one of the most talented bands in History. Sounded great live too. In my top 10 for sure.

For me, Geek rock is Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins and the like.

Woo. I'll listen to Equinox in its entirety any day...

Maybe even today.

There's just something so badass about listening to a dork like DeYoung singing about getting high (Light up), America (Suite Madame Blue) and kicking ass (The superlative "Born for adventure")!

...but then, I have a natural distrust of all people who are cool, hip and/or insiders. Gimme an earnest dweeb band (Styx)over a so-cool-that-if-we-kick-ass-it's-meant-as-irony band any day.(Weezer? Every band out right now?)

P.S. Key words: Any. Day. Badass.

Hell yeah! I'll second that!

Wait, what about Gong?

Another "Equinox" fan!

"Born For Adventure" is one of my favorite songs ever. (Check THIS) Great tune. That whole album smokes. "Midnight Ride" is another great tune. Maybe "Mother Dear" is not that strong of a tune, but everything else is tops.

The first time I saw them live in '77 they did BFA as an encore.

I also loved "Crystal Ball" and "Grand Illusion". It got a bit spottier after that although "Pieces of 8" has a few great tunes, and "Paradise Theater" is strong.

Such a dark name for guys with high voices and pretty songs... On teevee recently I saw the singer from Styx perform with a shows house band, and he was good! Come sail away was the song. He was a singin' and fist pumpin' and a playin' that piano like I dont know what.
Very good stuff.

I saw Ozric T.'s and Gong a few years back (different shows) and enjoyed both. I have had the pleasure(?) of catching Hawkwind a few times, are they geeky? They sing about books n stuff more than any band I know of. In the Rush thread some one mentioned singing about dwarves and such. Did not Zep have even more songs based on Lord o' The Rings. If Rush is geeky in this regard then Hawkwind takes the proverbial cake.

Hey Steven West

Yes Canadians hold Styx in high regard. High enough for us to allow Lawrence "dont call me Larry" Gowan to go and play keys on tour with them. Now thats geekdom!

Are all Canadians here named Steven? Seems there are at least 3, known for sure to be Steves.

Geek rock

You gotta be kidding

What I find really amusing is that the bands mentioned here are the bands that homer simpson likes - crap, safe, mid-western, FM-friendly pseudo rock. why hasnt anybody mentioned the Eagles??

Anyway, geek rock. As GaryG said, Talking Heads is something that I would count as geek rock. Televison  as well. The Residents, etc.

Then you have the indie-pop scene of the 80s, but that is another story (but yay! for the Chills and the Field Mice)

A geek is actually a circus performer who bites the heads off rodents and small birds, fact fans

They have the #1 selling record of all time (Greatest Hits Vol.1) I guess maybe there are a few people who don't see it that way? :hihi:

See what you mean, but that was the music I was listening to at school (along with the velvets, Husker Du, Pixies, PJ Harvey, etc.) and I was never cool  No matter how hard I tried

Oh...my...god...

That's a list of the most cool-friendly bands ever!

Could anything be more self reverential, ironic and insider-hip?

That's like the official music of exclusivity!

A scenario, for your consideration:

"Ummm...hey, guys, wanna listen to some records?"

"Okay. What you got?"

"Styx...and some Journey..."

(Sneers and self-satisfied laughs from group)

"Oh my god! No, we can't hang out with you, I mean, haven't you heard of the Velvets? The Pixies? Come on, man, get with it. Rolling Stone says your records aren't cool! Why, in ten years time none of them will appear on the best 500 albums list, and all of them will eventually be excised from the history books in favor of the cool bands we like! (Maniacal laughter) Hahahahahaha!"

"oh...um...okay. I'm going to go listen to some Styx and eat a worm. Nice talking to you."
