How to modify buffer size?

Anyone experienced this?

I recently received an m-audio SOLO and got it set up and working. But from Cubase, Guitar Rig stand-alone, and from Fruity, when I bring up the SOLO's ASIO control panel and press the up or down button to increase or reduce the size of the buffers, nothing happens.

If I want to change the buffer sizes, I've got to exit the host, bring up the control panel by clicking the icon in the task bar, change the buffer sizes, then open the host again.

Anyone else had this? Annoying as hell... :x

The buffer sizes simply seem frozen when bringing up the control panel from inside the host.

have you tried going start>settings>control panel? There should be an icon to click on that opens the control panel for your soundcard...

I think you've maybe missed the point here. The point is not that I don't know how to get to my sound card's control panel.

It's the ASIO control panel I'm concerned with, and I can adjust the buffer sizes fine when no host is running. But when one is (cubase, fruity), they seem to be frozen in place, no matter how I get access to them, and there are a few different ways.

That's the way it is with the M-Audio Delta 2496 as well. You get a prompt thet says

"The DMA Buffer Size can only be altered while there are no audio applications using any of your audio cards".

It is a pain in the ass, but there's no way around it with these cards, as far as I'm aware of.

I dont get it, why alter latency after you have set it to an optimum? I never change mine from 6ms.

Who said I had yet found the optimum?

set it at around 6ms - hardware midi is 5ms - going any lower may cause cpu issues and clicks - problem solved :)

hmm well with my maudio revolution, I can access the soundcards' controlpanel either through the systemtray icon, going to Orion's (my host) output config screen, or loading it up though the control panel (thats window's control panel)

then I just click in the box with the asio buffer amount and it opens the dropdown list with all the possible choices..

that said.. I cant have orion playing when I'm chosing.. but simply pressing the STOP button and then changing latency works.

if not.. then contact m-audio.. maybe they'll respond.. who knows.. they never respond to any of my email though.. I've sent 3 or 4 in the past year with no replies.

Thanks for the tips on the buffer size issue--simply knowing it isn't really a "problem" but instead a quirk with m-audio is a relief. :P

Now, I just wish I could stop the entire sound card from freezing duing song playback. I use another sound card (pcmcia audigy 2 NOTEBOOK) for my computer's multimedia (since it supports 5.1), but the m-audio freezes randomly during song recording and playback when the creative card is in and its software is installed. If I eject the card and deinstall the software, the m-audio trucks along. :? I want my surround sound movies AND a high-quality recording interface.

Tastes great? Less filling? Chocolate and peanut butter?

Sounds like a card fight! :box:

Rather than pulling the Creative card and uninstalling, have you tried to disable it under the System Properties Device Manager?

That is, of course, if you're using a Windows based laptop. I plead stupid when it comes to Macs.
