SFZ certainly will eat up performance, right. OTOH is it possible that the SB/Audigy cards use system memory to load sound fonts?

Post

sfz uses a lot of cpu when using the sustain pedal and playing a lot of chords. :-o

The main reason I use soundfonts in hardware though is not to lower CPU usage, but it is the only way to get near-zero latency on ANY computer.

Also, the AWE soundcards were the last to have onboard memory. All the others from then on, used system memory which is a much better option IMNSHO. :P

The KX drivers give you a lot more options to configure your audio card with. Very nice..!

BUT..!

A word of warning..!

Don't install them if you use WIN 98..!

They don't like that OS at all.

I'm glad to hear that.

But my experience was far from problem free. I ended up having to re-format my C drive and do a fresh install of everything - not much fun.

Back to Creative drivers now and no problems at all. But I would like some of the KX features.

Actually, the drivers are not easy to install on Win98SE. You need to reboot several times and then run the mixer directly before everything 'takes'.
It is even more difficult in you are using something like Win98lite.

BTW, sfz has one huge advantage over hardware soundfonts - no aliasing at all.
That is one of the benefits of doing everything in software.

:D SFZ and sound quality. You can chose different quality modes in the SFZ to conserve cpu untill it's time to render. Then you can render that track at the highest setting and get results that are very hard to replicate using anything else. I use SFZ to test my homemade soundfonts for problems. If there is a problem it will be apparent in the highest setting and will show itself.
