Hmm, I'm not sure exactly when I started. I remember the video game that got me interested in it, though, and I know that I got that in 1999. I wanted to listen to the game music, and eventually figured out that it was arranged using DirectMusic Producer.

So, the first time I attempted to make music on my computer must have been in 2000. I didn't make any complete songs at the time. Took a break from music, then resumed later on, I think around the release of Reason 2.0, and I've been doing stuff ever since then.

I'll be taking another break for the next few months, but only because I'm stuck on a P2-400 until I get a new system this summer. 2 voices of the default impOSCar patch get me over 50% CPU usage! And this is even on the lightest VSTi host I know of, Chainer.

I began making computer music about 5 years ago. I was a music major at the time (and no, I never finish my training). At the time, the college were using Pro-Tools on a Mac G3.

With two years later (thanks to new info I was reading from imported issues of CM magaines), I brought a PC & Cakewalk Home Studio with a free copy of FruityLoops 2. Apart from FLS, everything else in my bedroom studio setup has change since the summer of 2002.....but that's another thread. 8)

my first contact as a little kid were a TR-808 and a VP-330 vocoder from my father (I still play this instrument at liveshows
 )

1978, with a TRS-80, making tones with the cassette relay, through the cassette output, and also with interference on FM radio. Later with an orchestra-80 card, and at school with Apple2.

I even did a composition with piano, flute, and TRS-80 and performed it for a college composition requirement.

Then let´s keep it gpoing. :P
I started on October 2003. After being diagnosed with a kidney problem and finding myself with way too much free time on my hands (Yes. I´m still on waiting list for surgery :x )
Sold A Mesa/Boogie and a bunch of pedals to buy me a PC and some software. Started with Computer Muzys, but since I could not buy the upgrade I tried a bunch others of which I liked Tracktion (had it for free last december and will probably try out T2) and FL.
I liked FL so much that I bought it within the first 2 hours of downloading the demo and 2 months or so later went XXL.
I never had any hands on experience recording and mixing , but having lots of time was a point on my side.
I don´t know if I am any good. I just have a great time recording and mixing.

mid to late 1980's: Music Maker on TI-99

I started out around 88 with my trusty Atari ST, which I later added a 'Breakthru' sampler cartridge with 4 tracks of 'CD quality'* sampling! I also added a Cheetah MD16 Drum machine, a small six channel mixer and anything that I could find that I could use to make a sound.

*Well it said that on the box! To be fair it was 16 bit and 44.1khz but the hiss was incredible... :-o

~1991 - My first pro synth. A Roland Juno 6 (stolen)

~1996 - Borrowed my friend's EMU SP-12 for a year or so (he got an SP1200 - I ended up giving it back once I got the SY22)

~1998 - Yamaha SY22 and Roland MC50 (SY22 stolen, sold MC50 to buy JV-1000)

~1999 Roland JV-1000 and S-550 (sold the S-550 to buy ASR-X)

~late 1999 to 2001 Ensoniq ASR-X and Roland JV-1000. (I made some beautiful music with that setup...)

Aug 2001 - Mac G4, Logic 4.7, and Yamaha MOTIF.

MOTIF later stolen, sold the ASR-X (wish I hadn't) and I recently sold the JV-1000 to pay rent...

January-February 2005 - Mac G5 (its in the mail now!) Logic 7, Alesis ION (also in the mail!), AthlonXP 2000 PC, and a bunch of plugins.

1994 --> Bought myself an Amiga 1200 with a 200MB hard drive and 8MB of RAM

Bought the Amiga specifically to do music, with Paula's 4 channel, 8 bit audio :)

Used ProTracker at the beginning, then OctaMED which allowed to use 8 audio tracks instead of 4

~1995 --> Got a used Amiga 3000, wonderful computer, wanted to get a 16 bit audio card for it but never got around doing it. Started using Bars and Pipes Pro, that program reminds me of Tracktion don't know why :) ...anyways...
