I'm relatively new at the "new" mode of creating electronic music (sequencer + VSTs/AUs), and I'm working on developing a good setup. I'm currently on a Mac, using Logic Express 7, along with Reaktor Session and a variety of AU instruments and effects.
I've seen a lot of people on here talking about using Logic Pro, and not many talking about Express. Pro seems to have a lot more instruments and effects, including some that look pretty impressive, but it also has a lot of advanced features that I'm really not sure would be necessary for my level of expertise - and it's also quite a bit of money ($700 to upgrade at a minimum).
So here's my question: Is it really worthwhile to upgrade to Logic Pro if you're just doing music essentially as a hobby (i.e. not professionally), or would the money be better spent adding on additional instruments and effects that would be similar to the ones in Logic Pro (if they exist)? I would imagine the second route could cost much less, but is there a lot that I would be missing then?

Really? The best price I've seen so far has been $860 for the full version, versus $700 for the upgrade (assuming you can even upgrade from the academic version). To clarify that: Was a student back when I bought Logic Express, but I am no longer (otherwise, academic pricing for Logic Pro is very nice).
And one more note of clarification: I'm not looking to purchase this immediately - I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it to get the cash together for this, or whether it would be better used for different instruments/effects (unless there's an absolutely mind-blowing price out there somewhere).
