I'm trying to get a muted trumpet to sound realistic. I'm thinking like the soundtrack to the film Naked Lunch if anyone has seen it.
Any advice?
Tips on programming trumpets???

My advice is to not even bother going for realism unless you have a VL-1m or VL-70m physical modeling synth along with a good wind controller. Much like with robotics trying to emulate human characteristics, there is a sort of "Uncanny Valley" when it comes to making synthetic emulations of acoustic instruments. In other words, the closer you get to sounding like a real trumpet, the more the differences will stand out, especially on solo sounds. You would be better off trying to do a brass-like sound with lots of expression with a good synth patch or a very small, dirty synth brass sample for an effect. The more you try to get something realistic, but falling short, the more unpleasant it will be for the listener. So don't do real, but concentrate on being expressive instead (breath controller, mod wheel, aftertouch, etc).

use a lot of continuous controllers; especially expression and pitch bend. It won't sound perfect, but that's no reason not to try IMHO.
