Free, very simple VSTi sequencer?

I'm not sure what machine he'll be running this on, it may be a P3. Again, the simpler the better, for his learning curve as well as his hardware. He just started social security

A MIDI Sequencer that's free: Jazz++ (or Anvil Studio but it's pretty limited for free), as previously mentioned.
A VSTi Host that's free: lots. (MiniHost, etc)
Virtual cabling to join them together that's free: MIDI Yoke, MIDI OX.
Re-usable component-based solutions provision... I can put that on my CV...

mmm I thought that '2 insert VST' meant it hosted VST synths...'. but anyway, then sorry.
