Is there a free/cheap basic video editing program? Basically I just need something like MSPaint but for videos.
I've searched, but I'd love an opinion on a adware/malware-free solution.

all i know is that apple's iMovie is cheap and produces great results. if you're on a mac of course. i dont think it's available for the PC

Windows XP comes with a movie editor equivalent to iMovie. I forget the name offhand- MovieWorks or something.

Where are you based ? The current UK edition (Feb.o5)of Computer Video Editing has a full version of Ulead's Media Studio 6.5.

yes multiquence! use Shift-L and you can split your video regions up.
i once did some video/sound post-production in multiquence to prove the point that you dont always need those big pro tools systems. it was a great statement i think.
