I've looked everywhere for a standard bass drum roll, but I can't find one anywhere!
Does anyone know where I can download either a free soundfont, synth or even just a wav file of a bass drum roll?? (Got to be of reasonably good quality, not drenched in reverb or anything)
Thanks.
I need a bass drum roll...

Do you mean a "roll" as something like a snare roll, just with a bass drum?
afaik a snare roll is a snare every 16th or 32th note and perhaps a loudness / cutoff envelope on it.
Snare rolls are often used in techno/dance tracks in the 16th bar, aren't they?
So you'd have to place a BD every 16th or 32th (depending on your tempo and put a loudness envelope on it.

Yes, in theory this works, and I have tried it, but what you end up with is something very artificially sounding.
I have timp rolls, and snare rolls that sound great, even a few cymbal rolls, but for some reason, no bass drum (or kick drum, if you will).
(Maybe it's cause I'm too lazy to do loads of automation??)
Yes, basicially, I need a snare roll on a bass drum; you know, like is commonly used to suggest doom, or used for a thunder-like effect etc.
There must be something, maybe as part of a kit or whatever??

I don't know of such a kit, but you may try this:
Sample a lot of different base drum samples from a song with a long drum solo (e.g. Cream - Toad). Not just 3-4 but 15-20 different kicks. Then normalize them all and insert all of them in steps of 16 or 32 in your sequencer. You'll have a row of, say, 16 base drums which all sound slightly different.
