greetings all 'round.

i'm always fascinated to learn what motivates people to compose music, whom they make their music for. producing good music takes huge energy/time ... there must be some "payoff" for the composer.

so, if you're into it, please let me know whom you produce music for:

- yourself
- a *known* audience (people you're sure will listen)
- an *imagined* audience (people you hope will listen)
- the online world
- radio
- clubs
- live performances
- djs
- friends, family, colleagues
- a company (ads, jingles, etc.)
- a video game
- and so on

any insights as to *why* you make music for whomever you make it for would be great.

For myself, making music is at the core a cathartic process that I hope one day to develop into something more externally enjoyable/useful to others, but for now is mainly a means of flushing my demons.

Or trying to at least..either way, in the long run Reaktor was way cheaper than happy pills.

I usually do it for myself, or at least try to.

I always find myself thinking, "what would they think if i added this, or that", which is something i'm trying to not think about because mostly, it interferes with my "composing" and i end up trying to please someone i don't even know.

I make music for myself, the very act of doing it gives me great pleasure, it is a compulsion.

I play my music to other people in order to provoke some (any?) kind of reaction, this gives me great pleasure too.

I busk in order to provoke some kind of donation, this gives me beer

For myself, I used to think what would be like and I have to have this adn this part because then people will not like........well I never got anything finshed I like so when I started making music again I just said f**k it and just do what I feel, if the track is 1:30 and I like it then it stays that way.
But dont get my wrong, if people of suggestion I am open to it as pepopl often hear something I dont.......damn, now I talked into hole circle

Well it started out to see if I could still do it after being away from music for years. Then it was for myself and my family. Now it is also for a label in London. Just goes to show if you play what's in your heart, people will take notice. After years of trying to "make" it, I got what I wanted by not trying...go figure...

There's a twist to that one though...It's usually when you have one or more women you suddenly start getting attention from all these other women...There's a certain type of energy that radiates from a guy in this condition that they seem to be sensitive to...

For my self! if i can please my self im more happy than if i could please anyone else, at least when it comes to art... its a bonus if others like it! and im always open for suggestions, but nowdays i take such suggestions with a grain of salt, depending on what the suggestion is, cause once i try to work against my soul it becomes a heavy frustration,
it loses the fun part! its the thing with trying to please someone else. It only mess things up! Im trying not to please anyone else but me, and that is hard enough

When collaborating im in it too please both parts, if possible...

Sometimes i try to write stuff that i think will please or at least work for my family.. though im having most fun when me and my family can interact with music and when everybody is a part of the joy...
which is seldom though...

i come to think about all those classic composers that sometimes made music to please the emperor or the king.. it must have been a frustrating job, even if its enough frustrating doing it for your self.
