I do it mostly for myself, to get those melodies out of my head so I can go to sleep in peace :D
Sharing them over the net with friends and strangers is just icing on the cake. Specially when they seem to like the tunes.

I could say something, but that would be repeating exactly what Germ has said a couple of posts before.

1. Me, myself and I. In that order.

2. Duo project, 1 public release so far. Would like the next one to be better. A lot better.

3. Neighbour. Once I put together a track to have something godawful to play VERY LOUDLY, repeat-button pressed, in spirit of hateful revenge while I went to the supermarket early one morning a few days after my next-door fake-goth neighbour had woke me up with a particularly annoying 80's M.O.R. folk tune at 5 a.m.

I knew exactly what I was after - badly cut loops a few hundred milliseconds to short to give them that skipping record torture effect, organ-stabs through a feedback-y echo unit, short and repetitive infantile melodies sung flat and with a slightly hysterical voice. It's amazing how easily you come up with the ideas once you have a defined audience.

Hmm.. it's a funny mix. About 50% is just for me, because I have to or I'd go (more) insane. Stupid pain in the ass creative drive! :help:

Then about 25% is for friends - writing tunes for people I know - potential girlfriends, current girlfriend, ex-girlfriends, that sort of thing. And some for people that say something that inspires a song as well! :hihi:

The last 25% is my lame attempt to write something I think other people might be willing to spend their hard-earned cash on. What I write isn't terribly commercial and despite my better efforts I can't force myself to make a pop song for love or money, but I can tone down the weirdness a bit and increase my potential audience about 500%! I'm not sure I'm winning the battle, though.

The other me.

I'm not even sure I make music for me. I just do it because it is an excellent source of fun. I suppose that equates to me, but only in the same way that I go to the toilet for me (also fun!)

Releasing music on the other hand, is a communal affair.

Like Kellogg's (well kinda) 'I don't make music for anyone else'...or something.

I have to agree with Sepheritoh ("the other me"). I find my music tends to be more about allowing myself the freedom to do whatever I feel like than anything else.

Of course, I do like when people listen to my music and like it. :)
