backups are very important. especially if you port over to a new system. here is what i do to keep things oraganized. and yes, if the material was on a cover disk or i have the orignal installation cd, i still back it up if neccessary/possible. here is what i do...
for samples, i have backup folders that are kept to 650 meg in size. usually there i keep tempo based stuff in the same area. like a folder for each BPM. this makes them easy to find. as i use samples from these folders, those sounds are trasnfered to the folder where the song data is kept. that way everything is together and i dont reuse samples. plus it helps keep the size down
for VSTs: first off, only some VSTs need installer programs so i have two ways to backup. my file tree goes something like this...
a folder that says vst backup
two folders inside that one. one says Instruments, the other says effects.
inside each of those two folders, i have two more folders that say "no setups" and "setups."
when i go to set up another system or repair a crahsed hard drive (more than once), this backup organization works very well. for the non-setup folders, i just drag the .dll files to the vst folder inside cubase. and the setup insturments/effects i run as i need them.
i keep all my effect patches and instrument patches either with the song folder or in another folder where i save that kind of stuff.
...so when you go to make backups, using this folder system keeps everything nice and organized. hope this all helps.
How do you backup your sample and Vst folders?

I don't back up my vst folder - its pointless because most of the vsts need to be installed properly (data written to registry etc). So I back up th original zip or cds they came on to dvd-r. Same with samples and tracktion edits.
I rar up the whole bunch to save space, then use quickpar to create redundancy data in case the dvd-r goes bad.
Obsessive? Yes. But I've lost important data before and it feels pretty terrible - especially when its promising, unfinished music.
