I am considering designing a sample library of synths, with a variety of useful patches. Over the last few years, I've come to own a lot of softsynths (and a few hardware ones, but I have sold them), but even though I have tens of thousands of patches, I almost always end up programming my own patches out of frustration because I can't find the 'bread and butter' sounds that I want. But this is beside the point: I'm concerned with the legality of this, basically.

I know that other synth libraries sample analog synths and classical digital ones, edit them, etc., but I've never heard of a library based on softsynths. Assuming I am not just taking Pro-53 presets and sampling them, but programming my own, heavily processing them, layering them, and using a wide variety of synths, would it be legal for me to create and sell a library like this?

(EDIT: Ok, that question was answered, so here is another one)

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to properly sample and format the synth sounds? eg. Should I use one range (like C2-C8) for everything, sampling at minor thirds, or should I sample every note? Should I sample multiple times for the same velocity? Should everything be dry, or should I include delay/reverb on some patches that would be benefitted by it?

yes, it would be absolutely legal

(it makes no difference if it is a soft-synth or a hardware-synth - if you're considering to sample freeware synths it would be a good idea to contact the developer though in case we're talking about a commercial library

)

I'll read the synths' legal jargon thoroughly and run it by a lawyer before I do this, of course.

I have a similiar dilemma, i think.

A good friend of mine has a great collection of synths, both hardware and software. Let's say i find use for his SH-101 in a song i'm doing, it's ok for me to borrow his synth, play it, record it, do whatever i want with it and it's okay, right?

Now let's say i have use for his Z3ta+ in the same song, would it be the same situation? Would i be allowed to use his copy of it on my song?

Hmmm... yes. You could use his copy - but not on your own computer.

Check them out, they have multisampled synths in Soundfont format. They have a really nice free one.
