This occurred to me today, so thought I would run it by you guys for comment.

I use Fostex PM05 monitors. These are perceived to be a bit bass heavy. The alternative at the time of purchase - the Samson Resolves were "bass light". And so on and and so forth.

Seems it's a fact. Unless you can afford a very large amount of money, a totally flat response monitor system is always gonna be a pipedream.

So .....

How about a simulated flat response? To achieve this you would have an EQ plug as a master insert within your host, which would be permanently stuck on one setting, for ALL your work. - Find the setting that flattens your monitor's response, then, carve it stone.

Is that a daft idea? Or is it just too obvious?? anyone doing anything similar???

I think that's what a lot of people do. Probably more people use an hardware EQ though.

Er, well you know they eq the speakers to fit the room.

i think most monitors should have a relative flat responce, and room resonances probably have far greater effect that monitors, unless you're dealing with horribly cheap (cheaper than average home theatre setup) speakers. in theory you can do that with EQ, however in reality you'll end up driving the monitors way too hard for the frequencies you've increased the gain of. you'll get either distortion in the amps, or you'll be driving the coils too hard and get that horrible wobbly poping sound :D

alot of the time, especially with bass, a good solution is to get a lfe, and then compensate the room with those damping pad things in the corners.

personally i dont see why anyone would want to bother beyond the midrange
responce though, since a track will probably be played on a large number of systems if there is any reason for concern, and in such case it will be subject to the variables of all those systems. for myself, i just deal with things to make them sound good, and leave it at that.
