I've tried out a few freeware MIDI plugins (arpeggiator etc), and Live doesn't seem to understand that they are MIDI processors and not complete synths. One midi plug was even classed as an audio processor.
Were the plugs faulty or is this a known problem?

Try something like EnergyXT or Chainer, they are plugin hosts that will also run as vst.
