I've been reading recently that using EQs and multiband compressors which aren't phase linear can lead to phasing problems which can't be undone. Is this a big deal? How important is it to use phase linear plugins?

Most likely it is only a problem when you mix the processed signal with the original signal. On a "chain" of effects (not signal routing around the effect) it is hardly ever a real problem.

Linear phase devices also have their disadvantages, such as pre-ringing, and inherent latency.

Horses for courses..

Transients will have slight echoes both after and before they happen! AFAIK phase linearity is achieved by filtering the signal twice, once forwards and once backwards (which neutralises the phase shift).. or something like that!

The quality of an EQ in general IMHO comes down to how the transients sound after filtering. Some make them dull, some sharp, some don't really mess with them at all (which is the way I prefere them). Linear phase EQs seem to have some problems when doing sharp cuts around frequency areas that contain important transient energy like a kicks drums 120 to 200hz (which one sometimes needs to remove a bit) or a closed hihats 'tick' at 2khz or higher. That pre-ring I usually hear as a 'dulling' of a transient.. it gets kind of slured or stretched. This can of course be used as an effect to great advantage too! Say if you have a much too "ticky" hihat or a too punchy kick (is there even such a thing? :-o ) that you need to tame, then a linear phase EQ might do a better job than a 'normal' non-linear phase eq (IIR, right?). Again, it all comes down to "use the right tool for the job". There simply is no 'best' or 'worst' (well.. there are but lets leave that for another time,ok? :hihi: ).

here are two good articles from the UAudio guys

like bmanic said higher order (longer) FIR filters have more pre and post ringing so it might not be a good idea to do very steep cutting/boosting with FIR/linear phase EQs

Cheers for the advice and links guys, your replies are an example of KvR at it's best. :)
