We have a combi patch thread well on it's way, now how about an SFX one - I think many people could overlook the SFX potential of SS2, but with the on-board fx and Stretch, it can be a great sound-shaping tool.

First off - is it possible to reproduce the Arp2600 R2D2 bleeps in SS2 - i've tried a few random lfo pitch tricks, but can't get near the sound. Ben Burtt used the 2600 extensively - it was the sound of the 'Ark' in Indy Jones for example.

The first great sci-fi film for sound was Forbidden Planet, which made use of Barrons synth - i'm currently making a few soundalikes for my next bank of patches - basically i'm taking simple single oscillators and applying lofi, delays and spring reverb FX(not really used it much previously, but i love the sound of the spring reverb).

I guess the Spielberg/Lucas era is when the most famous synth fx came out, mainly due to sound designers such as Ben Burtt and more recently Gary Rydstrom who did Jurrasic Park (speaking of which i suddenly have a big urge to import some animal sounds and create/stretch a t-rex, heh).

Anyway, i'd just it would be good to share some ideas.

pricer! great thread to start up. i am fully immersed in film sound now as it is my full time study here in vancouver.

we learn all about burtt, rydstrom(big synclavier guy!), Murch and people like Randy Thom who was supposed to come talk to us two weeks ago but had to stay in LA for the oscar nominations- he did Polar Express AND the Incredibles.

I saw Frank Serafine playing Sonik Synth 2 at namm and he is endorsing the product on soniksynth.com, so it's really neat that a famous sound designer like him is on board with us(yeah i say that like im a part of the company and i did this work! sheesh. ). he did Tron, a Star Trek movie and other projects like the Hunt for Red October squids mentions on Sonik Elementz

i think the only setting that will acheive the R2D2 sound is the random lfos. i thought i posted this but i have been looking for animal samples to import into ST2 that i can share with everyone. that means i cant use the library stock animal sounds of course so i need the help of my kvrians.

im a huge fan of things like ring mod and rapid autopanning. they really capture a lot of the sci-fi sounds for me. im also now more willing to use phonograph and lo-fi effects, trying to dirty my sounds more. and it's great when you bring a clean sound in-the lofi effects make great room for this.

also for turntable effects you can run a sustained sound(like a violin) through the slicer, and set your pitch bend range to about 12. add some delay after that and it's total dj. sampletank 1 had the slicer in it but without a crazy pitch bend range like st2 offers it wasnt possible to do this effect.

we always undervalue the effects in sampletank sometimes cause they're just there and so easy. but i think the main thing that i enjoy about them is that all the patches are arranged with these effects and we can reverse engineer on them which you really cant do with so many other library sounds. i think this is one of the main reasons why squids loved the concept of sampletank so much when he started working with it.

also have you tried running your sampletank/sonik sounds through the new plugin called Sxratch? it's a lot of fun jeez.
