Hi,

I was watching the movie "Ray" and told myself, geez this guys doesnt need much in terms of gear to get the vibes going. He basically uses the Piano or e-piano to compose his melodies.

Since the only "performance" synth I own is a VA, I would like to hear other people play jazz using VA since I like this type of music.

I am interested in new sounds. I also have tried to create groovy melodies using my VA but somehow, I always end up creating a patch that sounds like an e-piano or organ. It is very hard to be jazzy using other kind of sounds.

I know Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays do it but its very cheesy and still a far cry from the type of music Ray Charles made...

I don't think Metheny/Mays sound cheesy at all. It's a totally different style from Ray Charles, you can't really compare the two.

Chick Corea has used synths a lot, but if you thought Metheny/Mays sound cheesy, you might not like Corea. His leads usually sound like a minimoog (not that a mini sounds cheesy, it's just that it's a very typical, classic lead sound).

One of my favorite jazz synth players is Scott Kinsey from Tribal Tech. Now, he plays some very original sounding leads. Highligh recommended.

Dont get me wrong. I love Pat Metheny. It can be very orchestrated at times...with some great leads here and there.

I am just thinking about getting great riffs out of something that, for once, doesnt sound like e-piano or organ ;-)

Jan Hammer's played a lot of minimoog jazz on his earlier albums (very early, before miami vice)

Gotcha

Definitely check out Scott Kinsey then, I have a feeling you'll like his leads.
