Unstable vst sound

I have a few months experience with vsts
and never had problems whatsoever.
The last 2 weeks however nine times out of ten
the vst audio doesn't come thru.
Settings are ok. There's midi in, the vst keys are
activated when i play them from an external keyboard.
There's simply no sound coming from whatever vst i use. This sounds weird i know, but regardless of
the settings the sounds sometimes comes thru, or
it simply doesn't. If there's no sound at first try
after opening Cubase SX, there won't be any sound
regardless of the settings i alter:monitor on/of,
changing vst banks, presets,..etc.
If i start up SX and the sound comes thru, then i can
work a full session without problems on whatever
vst i use.
And in 9 out of 10 times, after a SX startup,
there is no sound ( though the audio light flashes).
My hd is by no means full, and vst performance is
nowhere near the max. capacity.

I suddenly noticed that i can make the sound come thru by doing random things like changing presets/
banks, using another SX track and a different channel
for the same vst.
Then, a few minutes later the audio stops again.
This is no way of working. It's VERY irritating and
VERY unproductive.
I like vsts and i wanna keep playing with them.
Upon SX startup there's no warning whatsoever.
Everything seems to function.
What's causing these dropouts?
What soundcard settings should i change?

Is that on Cubase SX2? Bluedad suffers from the same phenomena!

He reinstalled an older version and it went away... Maybe you guys have simular hardware causing SX2 to choke?

Oops, I just replied in bluedads thread:
I had this "losing audio" problem a few times with SX 2, unfortunately I don't remember on which machine it was.
Since SX 3 I never had it again.
As your other programs are running fine, have you ever suspected the dongle being the problem, or at least part of it?
I mean, SX is challenging the dongle every now and then (in stop mode, fortunately). It's doing all sorts of funny things when you pull the dongle out during a session (not that you would do so usually, I did it for a test) - perhaps those problems are related.
I'd recommend checking another USB port for it.
In addition you may want to try the latest synchrosoft driver.
I've also seen faulty dongles allready - admittedly very few, but they were causing similar problems too.

There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

I don't know the cause, but when it happens try devices->setup->multitrack->reset & see if that fixes it for a while.
It used to happen to me back when I was using an SBLive with the kx drivers.
