I think a good way to describe FL is a mix between cubase and microsoft Excel

That's the beauty of FL. You don't even need to do that. Just add the VST, and the VST is automatically associated with a MIDI track, so you can immediately play or write in that VST channel. For presets, simply open up the plugin window by clicking on the channel, and in the upper right hand corner of the wrapper, look at the double arrows. Right click and you'll see all the presets. It's so simple.I mean, i don't even know how to put a synth on a midi track in FL, other then opening a preset in that browser.
Of course, if you WANT to do the whole MIDI track thing, that's simple too. Let's say we're working with Kompakt. Create a Kompakt instance, and in the wrapper, in the upper right, change the LED display to "1" or whatever. That's the MIDI port. Then, create a MIDI Out channel (Channel -> Add). Set the MIDI Out's port to 1, and now you have a MIDI track pointing towards the Kompakt VST. Could not get any easier.

Yes! Thats why I love it!Hellbilly wrote: Fruity Loops has always been in my eyes the Fischer Price of sequencers, or an oldschool tracker on steroids.

Yes Fruity Loops is lacking.
It lacks the ability to send SysEx data. It's a shame because it is my favorite sequencer; if it could send SysEx data i would be a happy bunny.

then drop and cut-up/arrange audio files in the playlistHellbilly wrote:
Well, i'm just used to years of linear sequencing in Cubase and Cakewalk.
well then your hardly qualified to pass judgement on FL and call it "the fischer price of sequencers"...Hellbilly wrote:I mean, i don't even know how to put a synth on a midi track in FL, other then opening a preset in that browser.
although that was kinda funny!
Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good

Definately, FL is capable of doing pretty much anything. There are some things in there which the big sequencers could learn from. Only thing that's still a problem for me in FL is simple mod wheel support. I in Cubase, it just works. In other sequencers, it just works. Not in FL. I've managed to get it to work on some plugins, but not all. I still haven't figured out how to get it to work on my Plugsound stuff. There are no browsable parameters for this plugin, but in Cubase, it just works. This is very important for me. If that supported directly as it is in Cubase, Sonar, Reason etc, then I think I would be hard pressed to find more things to complain about. I guess one other thing I'd like to see. I'd like to be able to edit separate piano roll data in a single piano roll. This has recently presented itself as a problem with Stylus RMX. It's difficult to edit Snares in one piano roll, Kicks in another, hats in yet another, etc. Otherwise, FL is pretty serious if you not doing too much audio work. In the meantime, I can't find anything good enough to replace it which doesn't have some major drawback.

Have you been able to control pattern selection of Fruity loops from Cubase?
In the help it claims that you can do this by setting up a PlayList Live mode midi channel in FL. However when FL is used as a VST from cubase, FL won't change it's pattern. I've gotten this feature to work with FL standalone however not while in VST mode in Cubase.
Does Anyone know the answer to this? I've been posting messages for 3 days. I just need to know it's possible!
