Midi Controllers in FL Studio?

Is there any good way to configure FL Studio to send midi controller data instead of the 5 options that are there normally? I couldn't figure it out unless I missed the config like Orion has (changing the VST config to respond to midi CC instead of VST automation parameters.) I know FL isn't meant as a end all sequencing environment, but this really hurts.

forgive me, I'm not sure what you are asking...what are you trying to do, connect to a hardware midi controller? Automate a vst? What 5 options are you speaking of?Joseph Burrell wrote:Is there any good way to configure FL Studio to send midi controller data instead of the 5 options that are there normally? I'm trying to directly control midi parameters (modulation, sustain, etc.) from within the sequencing portion of FL Studio.

use automation clips or link to controller, any native fruity pluggins will show a red icon when you hover over any parameter that is automatable. Right click the knob, switch, whatever and creat automation clip or you can link it to a controller. If it's not native you can still do it, just tweak the knob or whatever on the vst and click on the upper left corner of the fruity wrapper and select last parameter tweaked, then it's the same as above. Automation clips appear below the pattern section of the playlist, they can be streched to any length and have multiple adjustment points. Also if you have more then one there is a dropdown in the clip to select which clip, it also places a clip in the step sequencer...it's pretty well covered in the manual...Joseph Burrell wrote:I'm trying to directly control midi parameters (modulation, sustain, etc.) from within the sequencing portion of FL Studio.

I think i see what you're trying to do - i've been wrestling with a similar problem trying to access the Midi FX on my old SW1000XG.
If it's just the standard GM midi effects you want to apply: Load up a "midi out" panel. Right click any knob/fader, select "configure" from the menu and enter the desired controller number in the "Controller #" box.
Here's a list of standard midi Continuous Controllers:

If you want to apply effects from a specific synth you'll have to consult the user manual to find the relevant RPN/NRPN settings.

There are some options like hink mentioned above, but there are still some VSTis in which the mod wheel doesn't respond to any of the above, no automatable parameters show up in the browser list either. The mod wheel is automatically linked in something like Cubase or Sonar, but in FL or Orion, I can't get it to work. Also, in Orion, when you switch to Midi CC control, the normal link to controller method no longer works and other controllers already mapped will no longer be mapped.

Hmmmm... Orion isn't a problem and that's why I'm going to go with it for now since you just change the configuration of the VST from VST Automation to Midi CC (and its worked fine so far, knock on wood.) FL, though, is another story. I've figured out how to use a Midi Out panel to control these parameters, but that's realtime and its not recording them anywhere that I can edit. I like the idea, but I really need to be able to edit midi controller data. I can only do so much with Velocity, Pitch, etc.

that's what the event editor and automation clips are for, you can also record an automation in real by just hiiting record then play and make you adjustments in real time...those automated this way will be placed in the event editor, which in turn can be accessed in the browser.Joseph Burrell wrote:Hmmmm... this has been disscussed to death at FL, gol made the choice of 0-100% as opposed 0-128. Personally I cane live with it either way. You can adjust the velocity curve however, but your values are in percentage. As far as bank selection and needing 0-128 just use a dashboard and add a patch selector. For my B4 dashboard I just copied a gm text file for the patches and changed the names to the B4 names and saved it in the dash fo;der. Now for patch selectors when creating a dash not only are the Roland and gm choices there but so is my B4....I got a similar problem whit velocity values. Do you know how can i control this parameter in Midi out, so that he respond to 0 127 instead of 0 100% ?

Yep, it finally clicked. Use the midi outs as the sequencer for multi-timbral, midi controlled, VSTi's by routing the midi out to the VSTi based on the port and controller for the initial instrument you want to control. Then add events using the midi outs knobs or draw them in by hand. You need a midi out for each channel of a multi-timbral VSTi, just like any other program with traditional 'tracks.'
Thanks hink, if it was a snake, he'd have got me.
