Fruity or Reason

I want to purchase a music making tool this week. Will take delivery of a controller too.

I have worked with reason before. Last night I was reading up on FL and found it very intresting. Though i have the demo, the link to the getting started guide seemed broken.

I think FL seemed faster to work with, with a more conventional sequencer, I cant sequence in Reason. alwaz needed to rewire. Also liked the fact that I could import and play back Audio in FL (though i fail to uderstand the restriction between the 2 versions). I am also thrilled to see a video player, but does it scrub ?

Bout Reason I know it has a great sound banks available, does the same go for fruity ? The quality of synths vis-a-vis each other ? And Reason comes with a good built in sampler, how is the one bundled with fruity ? Also that fruity has VST support!

Most of all, FL is affordable.

I will just be getting into music arrangement. Would not want to change hosts midway.

Image-line (FL Studio) have recently posted some video tutorials on their site. they are excellent for beginners and include tutorials on how to set-up a midi controller, record audio, automate etc etc

may want to check those out to get a feel for FL.

I would say that it is very difficult to compare the two. You'll probably find many FL users who also use Reason, either standalone or as a rewire client.

I own both but find myself using FL Studio much more than Reason. But it's a matter of taste, workflow and approach, so I can only recommend trying both out.

FLS is user-friendly IMHO. Check out the demo ASAP.

I'm a die-hard Reason user, but from your post (and from many of the switching stories I've heard from both sides), it sounds like FL is for you.

I prefer the Fruit too. It's built-in synths are pretty basic, but nice sounding, the sampler lets you do pretty much anything you want, but where it really shines over reason is sequencing.
It's got a very simple step sequencer for drums and an excellent piano roll for everything else.
The standard version is a MIDI/VST sequencer, while the better version lets you record audio and have several audio tracks, I'd say it's worth the extra cash!
One other big advantage is that it supports VSTi's and ReWire, so you could have practically any synth you want.

I saw Reason at a friend. Nice, efficient & flexible on its own. Big downers for me were that you're stuck with the included synths & effects. No VST plugins! And no audio recording One of the standard piano patches in the sampler had all but smooth velocity switching. The Orkester sound bank seemed quite full though... And you can add samples 'till you drop. Can do that in any host btw.

I also tried the FL demo. Apart from listening to the demo songs (man, I HATE that genre, is that what you all call tarnce?) never did anything with it. It probably is me, but I found the GUI ehm, well... mysterious. I coudn't imagine me composing & recording rock/pop with it. I'm sure it can be done, but I did the uninstall clicketyclick.

Some time after that I discovered Tracktion. That was really straight forward to use, I recall you also have it already. Easy audio + midi, its what I want.

The coolest part of Reason I found to be <TAB> (flip the rack, see the back!) the endless connectivity options. I think EnergyXT is one of the few hosts that provide a simular endless flexibility. The only reason for this post: consider EnergyXT.

despite vast majority of characters I know use either reason standalone, reason-pt, reason-logic, reason-cubase, reason-nuendo (also one is supposed to reason-samp), I picked fls - never could do anything with reason no matter how hard i tried. besides you can sync flash files with fls, can't do it in cubase afaik.

cool...but what I meant was beginners at using FL.

For me, coming from a mac based/digital performer background, FL took some getting used to....at first I just used it to create beats and loops but I kept getting little glimpses of the "power under the hood" and for the last few months Ive been hooked.

Why? There is nothing you can do in Reason that you can't in FL Studio...there are many things Reason can't do FL Studio can.

FL Studio is an open platform.

FL Studio is much less expensive (and modular) so you can upgrade/buy parts as YOU need them.

Upgrades are FREE for LIFE. Case closed.

FL Studio is a thing of beauty - most powerful and immesely flexible, especially since v5 with time-stretching and whatnot. It's also great value for money.

Reason is indeed very cool...but it's also broken, who would climb aboard a closed application nowdays?
