You should check out Amon Tobin's soundtrack for the new Splinter Cell game. It's not a movie, but I guarantee you'll find absolutely no signs of weepy orchestration.emdot_ambient wrote:Oops, got sidetracked. My original thought was that the most amazing part about Forbidden Planet is that no Hollywood film would ever be this daring today.

But when a dramatic moment comes around, or an emotional moment . . . out come the violins and weepy orchestration. Makes me bloody sick.
Sorry for the tirade.

Ah, but that's a game. They seem to get it right much more often.Joxer the Mighty wrote:You should check out Amon Tobin's soundtrack for the new Splinter Cell game.
Pet peeve: I'm watching a movie set in another century, like Girl With A Pearl Earring, and the soundtrack is all violins and orchestra composed in standard cliche' Hollywood style. The movie looks 17th century, or whatever, but sounds like 2005. Blows the whole thing. That's what makes Forbidden Planet work so well. The soundtrack completely matches the aesthetics of the visual presentation: they are one.

The 'Keyboard' mag had a vinyl record on the cover in the late 80's that had Raymond Scott's tune on it. It was the sweetest track I've ever heard.
Shame I lost the record.

I still say Bob Moog should send half the money made off his MiniMoog to the Hugh Le Caine estate. If it wasn't for Hugh back in the 30's making the Sackbutt synth - we'd all be playing synths the size of the RCA MarkII still.

Have you heard 'Soothing Sounds For Baby'?!

Pretty cool though.

Ones like me, very likely. That is to say, rather odd ones. :-)mpj wrote:Imagine what kind of children this would create.
[No, I never heard this when I was an infink. But I heard very similar things not long after.]
