Which path do you follow ?

I was downloading some music at Monotonik earlier today.
It turned out to be rather good, but raised a question - the music sounds pretty much identical to Boards of Canada (first album). Now, the music itself is lovely and beautifully played , but has little identity beyond the BOC comparison
My question is a follows...
Would you rather make beautiful music that sounds like an approximation of an already successful artist or make individual music that fails to achieve the same standard

Me ? I'd rather plod along with the crap I can call my own

most of the crap I write is based on trying to emulate something I've heard elsewhere. Lucky for me that I have no clue what I'm doing and cannot get close to the original sound and voila, my own sound is born.
