Hi, I want to make some ringtones out of my music, for free distribution, however, I'm having problems with the bass (yes, its hip hop...) because the phone speaker is small and feeble. I know Waves has the MaxxBass plug for helping simulate bass response on smaller, more limited, speakers.

Is there anything else out there like this for AU or VST on the Mac or PC?

Baxxpander is a decent one, and it's free too http://www.kvraudio.com/get/491.html

Well, its not exactly the same thing. MaxxBass actually makes it so that there's less bass in the mix, but when played on small speakers (like TVs and cell phones), it gives the perception that the bass is still full.

From the product description, Baxxpander seems to be a run of the mill bass-juicer-upper. (not a knock on sound quality in any way, just going by the description on their website)

I'm not sure if it's quite what you're looking for, but 4Front has Contour Max...

I'll give it a try, probably this weekend. thanks for the link.

I think this one is somehow similar:

Get any good EQ and boost the first 4 or 5 harmonics of the frequency you want boosted.

Say you have speakers that roll off at 200hz, but your tune has a bass with alot around 150hz, then boost the first 4 or 5 harmonics of 150hz with an EQ.
So rather than boosting 150hz which your speaker cant
deal with, you boost 300hz, 450hz, 600hz and 750hz to taste.

Yep. I read the description. This would've done the trick, unfortunately, its only Mac OS 9 and Win98/ME/NT

You could try supercamelphat pro, it's got a Magic EQ knob for boosting the low end... or the equim eq if you want to use the harmonics trick- that will make it a bit easier for you...

hyperprism bass maximizer works on 2k an xp... i've used it on both and still do

the ones i've tried to achieve something similar to maxxbass: (I'm not saying these do the same thing)

4front things
discodsp thrillme
delaydots phat (pro)
izotope ozone
x-cita
voxengo warmifier
psp mixbass
baxxspander

at least psp mixbass and delaydots phat seem to do something similar. baxxspander changes the output really much, but works on some things.

Something like a tube emulation would work nicely for that type of thing. PSP Mixsat set to a valve setting with the bass tuned to 200-300Hz and alot of boost - then roll off the bottom end with a straight HPF to avoid distortion. It works by boosting the harmonics so you'll get it easier than mucking around with Eq trying to get all the harmonics in (although that will work too).

Mixsat gives a great impression of bass without necessarily having alot of bass in it - very warm sound (can be easily overdone...but for ringtones, I would imagine that overdone is just what you need?)
