Greetings,

is anyone familiar with Renoise or any software like that? It's supposed to be like octamed studio but I had't much luck there either.

check it out at http://www.renoise.com
I don't have the slightest idea how to get it work? I am just listening to the demo tracks included and I must say that they sound promising. Has anyone used it?

I have it. Love it.

It's meant to be a modern version of FastTracker II, but it's not limited to just being an "FT2 clone for windows".

What are you having trouble with? If you're familiar with Octamed and tracking in general, it shouldn't take too long to get up and running.

There's a set of Renoise tutorials here that might help you out:

If you can get to grips with the whole tracker concept then i believe it is the best tracker on the market (with possible exception of Aodix which i haven't tried).

If you like any sort of beat-mangling then its fantastic, as the seperation of instrument from track its played on means you can effectively route anything through any FX chain.

The demo version is more complete than any other demo version i can think of, basically the ONLY things that you cannot do are use ASIO and export to WAV. But you can save and none of the other features are crippled.

So in other words, you could download the demo and test it as muc has you want before buying. And at $45 it won't break the bank lets face it.

It is also good as a drum machine if you just want to roll loops and breaks for other hosts etc.

I have believed for some time that a lot of people don't appreciate whats possible with modern trackers, although i can understand that the old "spreadsheet interface" thing is a barrier for many.

I have never used octamed, well it's really hard when you check it for the first time... Too bad that those guys at roise don't have the manual on a pdf file...

but thanks anyway../At that time I try to make crazy beats like venetian snares and stuff like that... fruity does the trick nice but I read that he uses octamed so I thought that I could give it a shot./

Trackers are really not that hard, especially nowadays when pretty much every one of them has extensive mouse support.

Just think of them like vertical step sequencers on steroids. By default, this "step sequencer" has 64 steps.

Start out simple by loading some wav samples. Remember that the samples are not bound to a specific track, so you can have e.g. a snaredrum play simultaneously on three tracks.

Renoise is from what I have seen one of the best trackers around. It has a very bright future with a good sized development team. I think they are working on better documentation with the imminent release of v1.5.

There is also some talk of including a piano roll sometime in the future. Apparently this piano roll will be well suited for people using the computer keyboard for note input.

I tried the Renoise demo. Oh man is it nice! 8) I find I write music a lot more efficiently in trackers than on a piano roll.

Renoise is AWSOME!
Skale is really really good too.
Actually, I like the envelopes in Skale better - I love the multi envelope triggering (or whatever you would call it - each gate advances to the next envelope generator, and you can add a whole bunch of them; like a gated step sequence of envelopes...?)
I wish there was a sampler with a tracker interface for doing those wonderful tricks with sample offset. :)
