how do i make them and what (free) program would be best? I have tryed a few different filter programs but can not see anyway to make a filter that lessens over time. I tryed using delays of varying lengths in Filter VST but this didnt work. any help would be much appreciated

not sure what you mean by 'lessens'. If you mean the filter frequency lessens over time, then you just need to play with the decay time. If you mean the overall filter effect, then you need to find a filter with a wet/dry control (such as Kjaerhus classic filter) and automate it with vst or midi.

The most basic way I find is to simply create a low pass or high pass filter on your instrument with the default Cubase SX2 EQ, and just automate the frequency slide with MIDI
