every genre is still evolving ...

some slower than others ...

some take years ...

some do it overnight...

its all a matter of time ;)

the chicken or the egg? It would seem to me that a genre can only evolve as much as the artists evolve. It's the evolution of the musicians that create evolution in a genre. That's not only the evolution of current artists, but future ones that genre and other arists define by being influences for them.

Very very interesting topic.

I do think in the discussion of this there are no right or wrong answers and rather than argue about the argument or terminology we could all learn something, especially with the vast range of music listened to by our members.

Bones has made an valid point about categorizing a piece of music so we know whether we want to explore it or not, however, most artists will usually cringe when labeled..."oh it's not really pop, it's a bit neo-electronica rap fusion pop".

I don't think genres evolve but artists within them sometime do.
I love Dreamtheater but I felt a couple cd's ago they had reached the point of same-o same-o and I had given up on them but recently they seemed to change while keeping elements of what made me like them in the first place and once agin sounded fresh to me.
I think, especially bands reach a point in their careers when they have done it all before and that is the point where they either breakup or start changing, sometimes it works and other times it's bombsville.

Genres stay the same, Pop,Country,Rap,Electronic,TRance,etc.
It is the offshoots of these base genres which change and evolve the genre.

HI

A term that makes me smile a lot is 'DUB' - and you can't really equate it as a genre - practically any re-mix can coin the term.

But the origins of DUB might be traced back to sixties Afro-Caribean music which itself was influenced by R&B, which would have come down from black American slave 'songs' (not forgetting the influences of other 20th century 'genres' along the way)which came from indigenous African tribal music - which comes back to the prolific use of the word 'DUB' in almost any style of Ambient/Dance/underground music that throws around an instrumental track with copious use of fx treatments and bare bone accompaniment.

I am sure I missed a few bits, the point being Music takes influence from many quatres - although in this (and other) cases their is a traceable 'lineage' - which is fine, I like to know where I am coming from and what brought me to where I am.

Flipper.

Genre names are convenient categories for journalists, music stores, and record compnies.

If you use them casually all is well, but when they are used as a club to beat down innovation ("Hey that's not metal...that's punk") They are worse than useless.

Just to say I think 'Industrial' has certainly evolved - but is as broad as saying 'alternative music' these days. I just call my stuff 'experimental' all the time, because to me it was an experiment to see if I could play ballads or metal or techno. Thankfully the good people here at KVR and elsewhere said 'No dude, you're stuff is IDM, or EBM, or Techno Hardcore' and thus I'm pleasing alot more people than a handful of John Cage fans that wouldn't give me the time of day. ;)

And not to encroach on NovaKill's territory, but I somehow made it to #7 on the 'EBM' charts at www.newmusiccanada.com - who knew?

But honestly, I still make experimental music as far as I'm concerned. I'm just playing 'pin the tag on the style' to see what sticks. ;)

This thread reminds me of something that I've noticed in the Music Cafe. Often it seems that positive feedback and kudos are based more on how well the piece nails a particular genre. Sometimes that makes me think that I should work on making quintessential styles of music instead of exploring. I suppose I could pick a formula and just bang out variations of that formula, but I enjoy too many different types of music to not allow myself to dabble.

I suppose it all comes down to the reasons you do it at all. If you live for praise from your peers, then maybe you should nail a genre to the wall. Otherwise you should do whatever the hell makes you enjoy what you're doing.
