I was listening to 'Green Day > American Idiot' earlier and thought, jeez, this is so close to being the perfect single. It has pretty much everything I look for (it's only the song's lyrical content that lets it down for me)
1/ 3 minutes (or under) long
2/ It's got be by a guitar based band
3/ Instantly memorable melody
4/ Pointless lyrics, nothing deep anyway
5/ Put's a smile on my face each time I hear it

Anyhow, it got me thinking about what is my choice of the perfect pop single and (after not much thought) I settled for 'The Primitives > Crash' A wonderful single that I  as much today as when it was first released. I know this topic is subjective, I like other singles more than Crash, but as far as throw away pop music goes, it can't be bettered for me.

What makes the perfect pop single for you?
RIP Black Tom and Beckett. They weren't just cats, they were MY cats, the best cats ever.

eg...

Kevin Ayers "Singing a Song in the Morning"

The Kinks "She's Got Everything"

Motorhead "Ace of Spades"

I disagree with "the guitar imperative" though. And I'm trying to avoid mentioning Abba... :hihi:

i'd have to agree with the late and great John Peel - Teenage Kicks is pretty damn perfect to me.

two that come to mind are:
lio - rapture
ash - goldfinger

'ABC' by the Jackson Five...

followed by 'Tracks of my Tears' by Smokey Robinson

'Yes' by McAlmont and Butler,

'Tainted Love' by Soft Cell (the original is excellent too, but this version is probably more 'Pop')

'Numb' by U2

'True Faith' by New Order

and many others are near perfection to me...

Don't think there's any formula for me really, except maybe it should feature female vocals, or some bloke should be singing like a girl in it. :o

Then again, 'Numb' has no singing at all if I recall correctly.
Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

True Faith... good choice sir.

Otis Redding - Sitting on the Dock of the Bay is annoyingly memorable...

Yes indeedy... I also love 'Across 110th street' or 'Teardrops' by Bobby Womack (and Womack), but these are maybe more soul hits then pure pop :)

I must love pop more than I thought.

All the songs (that I know) in this thread, I love. I can't say that for many k-v-r list threads.

Here's a few more...

Ever fallen in love
Another girl another planet
Waterloo sunset
Give me back my man
I don't want to go to Chelsea
Smells like teen spirit

Et fuckin cetera
