`...There's glory for you!'

`I don't know what you mean by "glory",' Alice said.

Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. `Of course you don't -- till I tell you. I meant "there's a nice knock-down argument for you!"'

`But "glory" doesn't mean "a nice knock-down argument",' Alice objected.

`When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

`The question is,' said Alice, `whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

`The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, `which is to be master -- that's all.'

I'm hoping you've realized the stupidity of this question Sepheritoh and thats why you've dissapeared from this thread, but if not, let me explain...

Certain music based around a loop consists of primarily a static beat repeated with other repeated loops added and removed as appropriate. This music is little more than a "beat" which is where the term comes from. This probably grew out of rhythmic based african music and other similar music where the focus is not (in your case) watered down melodies, but drums.

People who make "beats" (and also much more money than you probably do)

pete rock
fat jon
madlib
mf doom
blockhead
jeff mills
akufen
juan atkins
richie hawtin

...the fact that i'd rather listen to a looped beat by any of these artists for 4 minutes than a stale pretentious "song" by you has got to say something. (please no, "yeah it says yer dumb!" comments ;))

and of course there will always be 8 year old kids calling their latest garage band concoction "beats" but there will also always be 40 year old pricks calling their washed up, limp excuse for music "songs".

in closing, you're a close minded pompous musician sepheritoh who needs to either wake up, or go to bed for good.

peace

Sepheritoh wrote:Who in his right mind would degrade his own music so much to call it a beat

I know I'm getting old and my linguistic skills has not developed anything since the 80's, but each time I see a post "Listen to my new beats" on something like that I can not help to think that this must be some 8 year old who just got garageband or PSX music 2000 for xmas and have no faintest idea what the word beat means.

Happily we do not see that on KvR too much, but I saw even on Soundclick some twirp's song named "100 free beats" made it to the top 10.

I have to admit that I never even bother to download or listen to anybody who has such a low opinion of his own music to call it a beat.

Puting the Ego nonsense aside.... words are all important. We are not telepaths, so how else do several billion individuals exist with one another? This thread and some of the posts (xoxos in particular) reminds me of "Barefoot in The Head", a novel by Brian Aldiss. In it, Europe is bombed with lsd by a mid-east place. So, most people go "nuts" and society falls to pieces. Among all this is a fellow that got only a small dose of the bombs. By the end of the book his madness has progressed and he (as well as those around him) see's himself as the new messiah. The catch is that the writing becomes, to most, gibberish as the plot/madness progresses. Aldiss did a great job of realigning words with meanings, or mashing several words together (sheer poetry!). Have a read if you want a challenge (in language and thought), some of you I know will really dig it.

Beatz is ok if thats your thing. I agree with both sides on this point. What I cant do is disagree with one, as that is not right for the other. These are not just words after all, but peoples thoughts... words are all important...

Exactly - slang is the keyword here. Slang is a dumbing down of a language by a group or subculture, the use thereof identifying the person with that group or culture (either positively or negatively depending on the observers perspective).

Slang has an alluring esoteric appeal, thereby giving the user a feeling of membership or affinity to an exclusive or unique group who is thought to be "happening".

Which brings up the other problem with slang...it's highly emphemeral nature. What was "hip" "groovy" or "cool" one day is now "lame" "Old Skool" the next.

Peace Out! and Keep on Trucking Good Buddy! (both thumbs up in your general direction) :hihi:

FWIW I'm personally more bugged by the "numbers as letters" shit, currently going on - but only a little.

Praveen, it saddens me that you resorted to the classic "they earn more money than you do" line in your argument. It was a decent post spoiled, in my opinion :?
On a general note, it's a pity these threads go so quickly into personal attacks - if one could run a filter of the personal stuff, there'd be some really informative communication and intelligent exchange of experiences and views.

Shame.

Yeah sorry bout that! Sephiroth's post really irked me with its pompous nature.

I think it does prove a point though.

Also..
You must admit that most often the use of slang just sounds silly, like the person's trying too hard.

Jamie Kennedy does a hilarious impersonation of a slang- laden hip hopper. The entire comedic premise of which is based on how slang often backfires in the users face, revealing what a clueless idiot, or "desperate to belong" outsider one is.

Errr...

'Slang' is the process by which language evolves....

New/old words are given new and/or different meanings, and, over time, accepted into general usage. And if fortunate enough, the word is incorporated into the mother of all language validators. Websters dictionary.

Your opinion, 1-2 (and yes, it is only an opinion) is rather elitist.

No personal attack, I just despise your stance. :hihi:

Taking stock of it all, much has been revealed I it is clear that there is some good reason why people call their music different things, other than being ignorant or stupid. It also reveals that some people would hate me even if I had to declare my love for my mother. Then there are some that just plain fall in the category described in my very first post.

I agree that the thread was very informative and I have learned the reason why people call their music why they call it.

:D :D
