Well said, sir!BONES wrote:I suppose it all comes down to the reasons you do it at all. If you live for praise from your peers, then maybe you should nail a genre to the wall. Otherwise you should do whatever the hell makes you enjoy what you're doing.
Why Shouldn't Genres Evolve?

My point was that it is contradictory. People go on and on here about the virtues of creativity and musical exploration and then go running up the ass of people doing quintessential "TRANCE" or "EBM" or "D&B" etc. This wasn't about my personal feedback. It was something I noticed when reading other people's feedback. I'm not looking for praise. I appreciate any kind of feedback.

But please answer this one question:
What comes to your mind when you hear the name Trent Renzor?
Industrial or Sell Out?

Clasically trained, excellent producer, successful businessman, ocassionally makes some damn good stuff. Highly skilled but a smidegeon less creative than most of what I listen to now.TonyVanDam 3:16 wrote:Exactly!!!BONES wrote:I suppose it all comes down to the reasons you do it at all. Why should success = "sell out" though? Is he not making the music he wants to make?

How would we know? Maybe he really wants to write opera, none of us will ever know that, especially when most of our information on the man extends from the marketing machine.foosnark wrote:Is he not making the music he wants to make?
The idea of "selling out" is kind of stupid anyway, as though somehow there were varying degrees of commerce.

Reznor is a legend in my book. True genius if there ever was one.

Nicely said Bones.
7zark7 - I think it's just human nature that people like to dump on people who do something well, but isn't 'typical'. We're all threatened by 'new things' when it becomes apparent it might work. I know many artists and labels are trying to combine Country and Reggae somehow (I ain't lying!)... And to us currently - this sounds stupid, right? And at best, anything that surfaces will be a 'novelty act' like Dread Zepplin or Rednexx. But - I think acts like that solidifies appreciation for say Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, or there was someone here at The Music Cafe that did this country-esque house tune called '40 Years', and that song still sticks with me.
And yes, Tuz and I did our weird version of 'Gimme Shelter', and I was 'selling out' a bit I will admit.
And everyone nit-picked it for not being 'more rocky' or 'more industrial' and why did I mangle Tuz's voice so... But it was different.
At worst, it makes someone play an old Stones record again - at best, someone may like some of the elements in my version and use it to define 'their own sound'.
It's all cool by me.
As for Trent Reznor, he's got a good set of balls on him. But I still say the 'Wizard Of Oz' is Alan Moulder.
