I've never been able to find really dry, flat drum samples like you would hear on
Devo-Freedom of Choice or
Tubeway Army-Replicas
or many other late 70's/early 80's new wave kind of albums. I like the way they recorded drums back then. It always sounds so dry and present to me.

Anyone ever hear any drum samples similar to this?

I do have a colection of some of the old drm machine samples.
Don`t know off hand if any are ones that were used by devo,etc.
Forget where I got them..but i`ll have a look later on.
I`ll be happy to give them to you.

These are real drums I'm talking about, not drum machines. They just mic'd and produced them way different back then. Much better IMO...

When i`d see devo,the drummer was playing "simmons".(I have all those samples)
Thomas Dolby used the "fairlight" drm samples.(I have all those)
I have more various machine samples from that time.
But if you say those bands and similar bands sampled their own drums...so be it.

I understand what you are saying, but the drums on Freedom of Choice are definitely not Simmons. The original drummer played homemade electronic drums, but Alan Myers played a real kit and quit later on when the band starter to shift to a drum machine.
Just imagine the start of Whip It in your head. Definitely a real kit.

Thanks, I see no samples of real drums there.
Lot's of nice vintage synths and drum machines though...

I can assure you that there are samples. In my opinion, there's at least one good sample on every record.
So just buy a number of records to encounter your first drum break of that era.
Although breaks are easier to get from soul and funk records, if you really want the sound of a special age, buy records and you'll find something after a while!

I program my own beats. I'm looking for samples to load into a drum sampler/sequencer.

everything I have (1,000's of samples) are much more "modern" sounding acoustic kits it seems.

I'm not sure if anyone understands the sounds I'm talking about. Drums just aren't recorded in this manner any longer. You can even go back further to early 70's Bowie or T-Rex albums and try to hear what I'm saying. I don't believe the equipment even exists anymore to create a sample set for those sounds. I dunno...I'm just fishing here...

I have all my devo lp`s on cassette.Lost my Freedom of choice.
Have duty now though...about to listen to it.

Speaking of Devo...here`s a cut where they use the fairlight for drms.It`s in Swedish,so I thought you might get a kick out of this!

"Freedom of Choice": Definitely real drums, especially that low tom rhythm.

"Whip It": Does feature a big electronic clap on occasion, but very live hi-hat! The snare could go either way, I think: sometimes hard to tell with 80's snares if they don't occasionally go for the rim.
