I never find any!

When I look in thrift stores I never fall on old synthetiser music, just once I found a sleeve of space synthetiser music that look quite cool but it wasn't the good disc inside!

Where & how can I find these oldies, I mean really old synthetiser/electronic music from the '50 to the '70? Did any of you ever found this kind of music in thrift stores by any chance or am I wasting my time?

I dont think that people liked that stuff in canada back then. :hihi:

seriously though, keep digging, it was a small following then, so there arent likely that many around. I found a bunch here in Houston Texas at places like 1/2 price books(dunno if that chain is only local to tejas or not) look on the interweb, there are used record shops all over...

I've found a lot at various used record stores and at various other places. But if you know what you're looking for, you can always do a search online. You'll have a better chance of finding them online but you'll have to face the uncertainty of dealing with a total stranger, and be prepared to pay a higher price.

If you're looking from the 50's up to the 70's then I suppose you're interested in everything from academic bleep-bloop music to German electronics ala Tangerine Dream, et al?

For the academic stuff, then look for electronic works from Stockhausen, Varese, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Morton Subotnick, Charles Wuorinen for a start. I'm sure others can recommend other names.

Unless you're just a vinyl collector, some of this will be available on CD. Most of the early '70's stuff is certainly available on CD.

Oh, and Todd Dockstodder, Jon Appleton (there were several albums of his using the Digital Music System--aka Synclavier? Appleton was the synclavier's co-designer).

I'm from Montana originally and I found a "Switched On" album of nothing but Christmas songs in a thrift store. Now, if you all aren't familiar with Montana, it's the absolute LEAST likely place to find this sort of thing.

The moral of the story is that these are out there but it can take forever to find them on the cheap. You might have to check out ebay or an online/catalog retailer to find them.

Good luck!

Funny this should get posted today. This morning, while cleaning out the audio edit bay at work, I found an OLD vinyl album titled "Country Moog - Switched on Nashville". I LOVE these old cheesed out synth recordings. I feel like I just hit the jackpot. :)

I have no idea how long it had been sitting there, but I also found a copy of 'Tomita - Snowflakes are Dancing' and some old Synergy LPs.

You should try Ebay, I've picked up a few old synth albums there.

Well, the early synth-heavy albums didn't sell very many copies (usually), so there simply aren't a lot of copies around. I bought a fair amount of synth stuff back in the late 70's/early 80's, but I'm not planning on selling any of it. Maybe a lot of the folks who bought those albums want to keep them?

Have a blast!

You're in Montreal? Try enquiring at Cheap Thrills (on Metcalfe between Sherbrooke and Maisonneuve) or Esoterik (on Ste-Catherine West near the Faubourg).

Yes, Montreal is a great town for electronic music and gear.

My other suggestion is Ebay or www.gemm.com (I think?) I've gotten alot of rare and sparse records and CD's from these sites (Thank you Tom Ellard! :hihi: )

Maybe you should look under the category Synthesizer instead of Synthetizer...

Over the years I have found many records at the Salvation Army stores, Goodwill etc.. Its all hit and miss, but finding something for $0.25 is reward enough.
One fave is a double record set of synth samples. Its stashed away now so I cant look at it, but I think it was called "Inroduction to Electronic Music" or some such thing. It had a booklet with lessons on synth components and filtering etc... as well as all sorts of sine/saw/square wave samples...different beeps and bloops (60's release). Also found some good French Canadian Space Disco (yummy orange vynl...)(mid 70's release). There are many others but...this is only to serve as inspiration to go and look.

So, things are there, overturn some stones and see...
Reverbnation
see ya 'round...
