This, from the person who quotes Rock Lobster in their signature?

Yeah, I guess you're right. :D I find Rock Lobster irritating as hell too, but the lyrics crack me up, what can I say? :D :D

That's an excellent nominee for a perfect pop song. I would also like to include California Girls while we're at it. Either the Beach Boys or David Lee Roth version, it doesn't matter. I like them both.

For critic's choice pop songs I dig right now...all of them were really well produced:
1) 'Karma Police' by Radiohead ("This is what you'll get when you mess with us")
2) Totally agree about 'God Only Knows' by the Beach Boys
3) Not a huge hit, but I love the hook of '99 Problems' by Jay-Z!!! "Hit me!!" Rick Rubin has produced the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, The Jayhawks, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jay-Z, and others. He's done a lot for many genres of music.
4) 'Strawberry Fields Forever' the Beatles...backwards hi hats, organ effects, great lyrics, weirdo ending, great video, so lovely!!!!!
5) 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Queen...I'm amazed that this song and 'Ina Gadda Da Vida' could be pop hits because of their length. 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is wonderfully written, produced, arranged, performed, and it sticks in your head. That's pretty cool for such an epic number in my opinion.

Okay, total cheesy/guilty pleasure song, but the production had me wanting to hear the song again after the first time:
I agree with Britney Spears 'Toxic'

I know it's easy to rip on this song with the principles of what qualifies good music, but the Neptunes did a hell of a number with this track. Mother Theresa could have sung it and I would dig it.

I have heard several Beach Boys songs, but I don't remember that one at all. Oddly enough, that's the one that seems to be getting the most enthusiastic response on this forum.

I pretty much agree with the rest of your list. I just don't remember that one Beach Boys song, so I can't really comment on it.

Earlier in this thread, I made a somewhat negative comment about "Toxic", but I do sort of like the way the song turned out. I just wouldn't suggest it as an example of a perfect pop song--it's not too bad, it's just not perfect. :)

Get a-hold of a copy and weep with joy and passion. Possibly the most moving song about a relationship you will ever here

I may not always love you
But long as there are stars above you
You never need to doubt it
I’ll make you so sure about it

God only knows what I’d be without you

If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me

God only knows what I’d be without you

God only knows what I’d be without you

If you should ever leave me
Well life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me

God only knows what I’d be without you

These don't fit all the criteria, but here goes. I don't necessarily like all of these but am forced to admit even those I don't care for were massively popular and/or catchy.

Telephone Line -- ELO
Take a Chance On Me -- Abba
Hocus Pocus -- Focus
Space Oddity; Fame -- David Bowie
Green Onions -- Booker T. and the MGs
Holly Holy; Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show -- Neil Diamond
Money For Nothing -- Dire Straits
Telstar; Hawaii Five-O Theme -- The Ventures
Photograph -- George Harrison
Rock 'n' Roll, Parts One AND Two -- Gary Glitter [part one actually has lyrics]
Paradise By the Dashboard Light -- Meat Loaf

Millions more. None are quite what I'd call "perfect pop" but IMO they've all got pretty good claims.

The Beach Boys - California Girls
The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
The Beach Boys - God Only Knows

Hmmm... even more emotionally moving than Baby Got Back, by Sir Mix-A-Lot? :)

Seriously though, if it's so good, I wonder why I haven't heard it already?

I've heard all these Beach Boys songs:
California Girls
Good Vibrations
Surfin' Safari
Surfin' USA
Surfer Girl
Little Deuce Coupe
Fun, Fun, Fun
I Get Around
Wouldn't It Be Nice
Kokomo

Isn't that enough Beach Boys music for one lifetime? :)

Now that the word "beach" is being repeated so much, a personal favourite comes to mind: "On the beach", by Chris Rea. I love that song! It's SOOO CUUUUTE!!! How can I have forgotten that one?!

we could almost have a thread on what makes or doesn't make a perfect pop song

God only knows is the most perfect bittersweet/meloncholy/yet simultaneously happy song/melody ever written. I think it doesnt get as much radio play for that very reason... seriously, if I were on a deserted island and only could hear one song the rest of my life, I think that would be on my short list if I did not pick that one... I dont too much care for most of the beach boys stuff other than that and a few others like wouldnt it be nice, surfer girl, and track 2 on pet sounds..
