Music is better than politics.
You may think I am kidding, that I am trying to be cute, or silly, or ironic. I'm not.
I honestly think that the point of human evolution is to promote the creation of music. That making and hearing music is BY FAR the most important thing that humans do.
Music can harness the most horrible aggressions in our souls....and render them harmless. How foolish are those who believe that the music created by a band like Slayer promotes violence. It PREVENTS violence, by the nothing short of magical way that it turns a pack of angry and violent young men into a community.
Music can express mathematical equations, and it can express the most wrenching alienation, and it can do both at the same time. No other human activity has this ability, nothing else even comes close.
Some say that music is an art, or a craft. And so it is. But so are cooking and eating an art. But they are much more than an art. They are necessary. So, too is music necessary. Lets give that it's own paragraph.
MUSIC IS NECESSARY!
It is not an option, it is a need.
Everyone smiles when I say this. They think they see my point. But they don't. Because they continue to TALK over, rather than listen to, the music they claim to "Love".
Talk mostly about politics.
Okay, now politics are also necessary. But not the way food is necessary. It is more like the way that shitting is necessary.
We have to deal with this stuff, but not because it is good in itself, but to secure OTHER good things: trade, peace, roads, food and shelter for the needy, etc., etc.
The thing about politics, though, is that is the absolute psychological opposite of music.
Music allows people from opposite sides of the globe to interact and communicate in a totally peaceful way. Politics allow people from opposite sides of the globe to f**k with each other. Sometimes necessary, perhaps. But again, the way that shitting is necessary.
But people think that politics represent the important things, and that music is something to do when there is nothing "more important" to do.
There is NOTHING that is more important.
But this way of thinking that music is a luxury, not a necessity, infects even those who know better. Sadly, many here at KVR politicise issues that are purely musical. And instead of the wonderful world of KVR at its best: instant international musical communication, where people of totally different ethnic, religious, cultural and political backgrounds can jam with each other, share insights and ideas, and make lasting friendships, we have bickering and bitterness.
And I really miss Shane Sanders. I didn't even know what his beliefs were until he was gone. They are very different than mine. But it never came up.
We were too busy talking about music.
