New mp3 demo of our Zvon Horn 02 foundfont.
Got brass
This is not a big collection, it's only an humble sf2 with 82 presets though. The demo uses 6 different presets with up to 4 playing at once.
It's not a real song, just a set of variations on the same riff. But I think it does show the kind of effect that can be attained. IMO it has a 50's brass flavor.
We also have a 48 MB demo soundfont of it on our Free Sounds page.
Comments welcome.

If by musical, you mean more complete, not just riffs, the answer is lack of time.
If you mean something else, music is in the ear of the beholder and I wanted to make a hard-hitting brass section with some variations and I'm happy with the result.
Of course anyone is entirely entitled to not like it.
If someone wants to take a shot at making a better/different demo track, I will welcome the efforts. Just download the demo soundfont of the Zvon horn 02 on our site. I'm willing to give a free copie of the full version for entries (up to 5) that we will select. We will also post them on our site and of course the authors will be credited.

Can you tell us how do you sample brass (mics technique, preamplifier, etc) or is a commercial secret?

I'm glad you like the soundfont.
Recording a brass instrument is like any other recording, better the mic and the preamp and better the sound will be but there's no absolute rule. Some mics are better suited to brass than others but any mic will have its particular sound that one may or may not like. This topic could be discussed for months and nothing conclusive for everyone would come out. Personnally, I use the preamp in my Mackie 1202.
The most important thing when recording brass is to not overpower the microphone. This means that the bell of the brass is usually a few feet from the mic and not directly aimed at it. Since in my sessions, I'm the horn player, the louder I play, the further I am from the mic. So I will move back and forth from the mic according to what I'm playing.
If I play very softly or for some not too loud special FX, I may be quite close to the mic and the bell of the horn aiming more directly at the mic.
The other important thing is to aim at the same spot during a certain passage, if the bell moves too much, the recorded sound will change and the level may change a lot too. But then again, it may be the desired effect.

Do you use Dynamic mics? sm57? i heard that condensers are not the best for brass.

I've used both types, condensers can be used for brass, it depends which ones, some are designed for brass.marce wrote:Do you use Dynamic mics? sm57? i heard that condensers are not the best for brass.
The best thing to do if you have more than one mic is to do some test recordings with each, and see which one you prefer. You can also use more than one mic on the same source at the same time, but if you do that beware that if you combine both takes in a mix, some phase problems may arise.
As for the Blue Ball, I had never heard of it before. I cannot say anything about it. I never tried any Blue microphone but they have a very good reputation.
