i think it would have been useful if I didn't have so many banks already.
i've already gotten familiar enough with the banks I have that I know or half-remember where to look

it would be a big task, full of difficult classification decisions to run through all the banks now.
it's easier for me to look for something I think is in the ambient or dx7II bank and if I don't find it I might find something that works better.
i just can't see taking the time to get that organized and having someone else do it for me doesn't work either. I'd rather search flat across a bank that through some nested structure.

just me. i can see how it would be very useful for some.

I would rather have it than not. But the default categories are overkill to an extreme.

I am guessing that most ppl would be content with 4-6 main categories and no hidden subcategories. Perhaps there could be two default modes, normal and anal.

Post

Definitely keep it. I just bought Rhino after buying z3ta a few weeks ago (which doesn't have it) and I "think" in patch categories, so it's useful.

Perhaps it would be more useful if it could be pre-populated by the factory banks and the one's for download from your site. Ideally, if you could add some meta-data to each preset, maybe an extra field to the side when creating the sound, so that the DB just scans and adds every time a patch is made.

I'm not sure what the limitations are in the VST spec, and if that affects how to do it. But, you already have a comments field per patch, so the new 'patch type' field could simply be appended to the front of that comments field behind the scenes and then scanned by the DB.

Another option could be to store the category along with the preset the first time you drop it into the database. That way, new presets could automatically be categorized, provided their creator put them in a database category to start with. Unfortunately this won't work if people change the default categories - and I believe most do.

Shows what I know, didn't even know you could rename the categories.

Rename, create your own, ... whatever you want :-)

Hey 'Tick, just wanted to second my own comment from a long time ago - since then I've added a number of Daniel's banks, and the way you have the bank/preset management scheme worked out is really great! I work through a new bank a few times, find what sounds I really like, note a basic category they might fall into, and place them there (I even have a holder for those that I *might* get back to later).

Then I just use that as my 'master' bank, with all the ones I like; if I start running dry of ideas, I turn to that holder with some of the 'maybes' in it, and if nothing turns up I can bring in the individual banks again.

Flexible and intuitive - great feature that I wish a lot, if not all, instruments shared!

P.S. Thanks for your reasoned and mature approach in one of the 'other' threads...

well no the database / Library is not useliss if you want full view quick access to all presets either collected or created. Rather than one bank at a time. Anyone planning on making a bunch of presets grouped by category would find it usfull to quickly drag and drop a preset from any bank to expand on a single preset. WHat would be kewl is if you could save the library to give to freinds...what do you think about that? it would be alot more usefull in that regard.

Just give them your rhino.db file :-) That's the library. Of course they'll need a full version of Rhino. And you shouldn't give any third-party presets, obviously.

The library looks useful, but I'm surprised it is empty. The names of presets don't give away what they are - I like a little hint here, like, 'lead', 'bass' etc. Quite a few synths get away with naming their presets LED - whatever, BAS - whatever, making it easier to wade through them.

the idea is good, but i never really took the time to "populate" the database.

Personally I don't see the point of it - to make use of it you need the time to go through every single preset and decide what category it might fit in (and many will fit in several) - too time consuming, having them organised by bank is fine already, the screen could be used more efficiently.
