His two main basses were a four-string Yamaha DB1200S that he used on both tracks and a Shergold six-string. His only pedal at the time was an Electro-Harmonix Clone Theory, and though he didn't bring his main cabinet, he did have a little rack with an Alembic valve preamp. We put that into a 12-inch cabinet that was kicking around the studio. He was happy to go through the pedal into the preamp and straight into the desk, but I wanted to include a speaker of some sort so the bass would be moving some air. As I recall, we used a couple of Sennheiser 421s on the bass cabinet. We had the amp, a straight DI, and a direct feed from the back of the Alembic preamp, all going into the desk. The amp and the Alembic were both post-Clone Theory and we mixed the three signals down to mono as we were recording.

The topic of the way Peter Hook gets his tones has come up a couple of times here (once initiated by myself
) so I thought this might be interesting. Sound On Sound does an interview with Stephen Hague on the recording of New Order's "True Faith" in the March issue.

brilliant. Peter Hook is one of my Top 3 favorite bassists.

For many many MANY years i thought he played a real Rickenbacker in Joy Division, i always wanted to own one because of this. Turns out it was some cheap Hondo-imitation of a Rickenbacker...hues wrote:I dare somebody to say something bad about Peter Hook...

o.k. I did a *sound-alike* a couple of times and it went like this - bassguitar into my modded ibanez basscompressor pedal and then into my blue bass whammy or modded boss chorus ce2. I played slap (thumb only and played pretty brutal so there was fret-ringing), pickup pan more on neck (~70%), and post-eq like hp @70hz, some broad bell boost @650hz, cut on shelving high. I used tempodelay afterwards.
definitely not exact replica for purists, but stylistically it was more than just good.

It's also important to note that his playing style contributed to his sound as much, if not more, than his gear. Meaning altenating between, and sustaining, two notes, a fifth apart, up high on the neck. That's what I think about when I hear the name Peter Hook....

That's nice advice. If some of us don't have modded boss chorus ce2 and so on it's all the same a beginning to get something that might sound good. That's the best thing often when you try to get the XXX-sound - sometimes you end up with another, good one.mauseoleum wrote:o.k. ALL true punks are weaklings, as a matter of honor.
