I'm learning how to use MIDI out now, for the following purposes.

Instead of opening, say, 2 instances of the same vst synth, i open midi outs and direct the synth towarsd them so far so good.I'm doing this to use less cpu.

BUT

can you use a different sound of the synth for each midi out?

only if the synth is multi-timbral ...
something like Tera2 , for instance ...

aha
anyone knows if Zynaddsubfx is multitimbral?

if so, how would that be done?

according to this :

Zyn is multi-timbral ...

i haven't used it ...

usually , what one does is assign a voice , in the synth , to receive a particular midi channel ...

match your midi out channel , in FL , to the voice channnel in the synth ...

In order to get two (or more) sounds out of one synth instance, has to be a multi-timbral synth.

A couple of examples:
- sfz and sfz+
- Tera
- B-4
- Edirol Virtual Sound Canvas & Cakewalk TTS-1

For example, with the Editol VSC, you have 16 channels:

You'd set the MIDI out channel to correspond to channel you've selected a voice for.

On the other hand, using MIDI outs to point two Fruity channels to one instance of a synth is going to use more CPU (a trivial amount most likely) than using the synth directly... but it may add to your clarity in your mind about what you're doing.

yes but I'm referring exactly to Zynaddsubfx because only one instance of this synth can be used at the same time, and it's a pity cos the synth sounds wonderful.

if the synth is multi-timbral , you only NEED one instance opened ...
there must be a page , in Zyn , that alllows you to set the voice allocation ...

Ahh... when I went to answer your original post, I didn't see a reference to ZynAddSubFx - now I see it in the follow-up.
