I have gotten somewhere lately...bascially trial and error and finding out that things are starting to fit together better.

But I really have no clue. I want to learn more about how the mixing process works, when to apply effects, how compression is used, how the audio waves are being manipulated, chanining effects etc.

Can anyone recommend a good book or online tutorial?

I have recently bought Adobe Audition for cleaning up my recordings, but I use Ableton Live and FL Studio as my main sequencers. I own several plugs from Voxengo, Kjaerhus and PSP but must admit ignorance as to how they really work... :help:

http://www.tapeop.com is a great resource. The message board is down right now, but you can get a free subscription on the website. I love it because its much less pretentious than the other audio mags.

If the message board gets up and running again, check it out.

Enough thread hijacking already! I posted in Putte's thread and I have learned everything I need to know about how to become a pro in the muzik business but perhaps a good book would help that education, erm, settle.

It's really cool. Follow-actions are implemented a bit strange, though. Every time you change clip you need to load the next one from tape. If you got a microdrive (or preferrably two) then it only takes about 25 sec.

And the sound quality is incredible! Much better than LootyFroops on a Polaris Spark submerged in the bathtub!

All fantastic books. I've read a dozen or so of the more popular books and these are the three that will curl your toes. :D

Sawri. As for help on the mixing side of things Sound on sound usualy have alot of tips, you can search their back catalog online. http://www.soundonsound.com/

I havnt been recording long but i've tried to learn through trial + error and i'm also currently taking an AS level music tech course.

If u've got free time and a bit o cash it might be worthwhile finding a local college course or something, at least then you'll have a teacher on hand practicaly any time and u'll be able to record and expeiment with the school's facilities. Just a thought mind.

As for books, cant help :(

maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but the best book i have read on analogue synthesis (out of many many) is allen strange's "electronic music: systems, controls, and techniques", and a good book on mastering is bob katz's "mastering audio".

When I'm not busy being awesome and never stopping, I work in a bookstore. I know, I'm 8)

Behind the Glass and Sonic Alchemy are two books we carry featuring interviews with producers. When you get past the analogue-vs-digital chatter and gear lists, there are some lovely nuggets of wisdom to dip in the honey mustard of your own experience.

Mixing With Your Mind By Michael Paul Stavrou.

This isn't you average "tweak this" and "adjust that" book. Stav explains some things in a way I had never thought before. It was a real eye opener. George Martin supplied the forward.

This book is a must have for anyone interested in mixing, IMHO. :D

A side note: while Sir Thorsen Puschnasz'z tuitorials are an exellent resourse, unfortunately they're not available in hardback. This makes learning difficult. There's no place to set your cup or roll one with an online tuitorial.

I look forward to the printed version! :hyper:
