A Few Technical Questions Concerning Every Host

I was just wondering how other hosts handle a few things. I'm asking because no-one noticed that MIDI automation wasn't working in my new synth. I hadn't noticed because ORION has its own automation thingy and it just works. So...
Does your host automate via MIDI cc's?
Are MIDI cc's useful for anything in your host?
I'm asking because allocating MIDI cc's in SE takes ages and I won't do it any more if I don't need to.

Tracktion doesn't do anything with MIDI ccs except record them (and let you edit them obviously): it can't map them to parameters in plug-ins.
VST automation will work fine, but unless you implemented it in SE I would not be able to control your gui knobs from my hardware MIDI ones.
Once Tracktion 2 is out we will apparently be able to map MIDI controllers to VST parameters, in which case you can stop bothering if you want..
Same limitations apply to Cubase VST.. not sure about later versions.

AFAIK eXT allows MIDI ccs to be mapped to vst automation (like T2 will apparently) so it doesn't really matter if the plug supports them natively or not..

Sonar here.
I can not work without automation. It is totally essential for using VSTs like GPO.

That wasn't the question. I was interested in whether or not MIDI cc's were necessary for automation.Sepheritoh wrote:I can not work without automation. It is totally essential for using VSTs like GPO.

If you do not have MIDI CCs to automate then you do not have automation that is usefull to GPO. Maybe I understand your question not at all or maby I should expand. GPO is an orchestrata library and no strings or other orchestra instrument would sound realistic without fidling with the expresion (CC1 in case of Gpo).BONES wrote:That wasn't the question. It would have been possible to reprogram GPO to make use of DXI automation to achieve the same control, but then why would they want to do that if MIDI CCs automation is already available in a much larger number of hosts.
Hence, my reply that it (meaning MIDI CC automation) is essential when using GPO.

But GPO is not a host, is it? And I was asking about hosts so that i can make my VSTi better. So I am still a little confused because in ORION you can automate any VSTi without MIDI cc's as it has its own internal system. I imagine that would include GPO, as it certainly works on everything I've tried it with.

I suspect you will discover that you can automate GPO with VST automation, as well. Although I don't know for certain, I bet that the CC latch is only used to physically control the plug-in, and that the automation 'track' itself is VST. I couldn't be arsed to research this, but that's how many hosts work it (including, to my surprise, eXT apparently!).Sepheritoh wrote:Hence, my reply that it (meaning MIDI CC automation) is essential when using GPO.

Sort of... but one does want to do one's best. I actually do 'em to promote the band so the more people who use 'em, the more traffic it generates to the site. Half the krap that goes into 'em these days is stuff other idiots have asked for [as opposed to the stuff this idiot would have put in anyway] and they are certainly better for it.Borogove wrote:Dude, you're developing synths for your own use. If MIDI CCs are too much trouble to bother with, don't bother with them. The host you use and the host I use can do their own MIDI to VST param conversion, and who gives a rat's toenail about anyone else?
